This article gives a good snapshot of Jacksonville's vibrancy in 1941:

Lol... some things remain the same...
QuoteWeekday mornings and evenings, the traffic congestion is terrific in Jacksonville. The city has not been able to keep up with the large influx of people, for many of the streets are too narrow for the number of cars using them.
That one will never change. We can widen as much as we want and there will still be congestion. For example, Blanding at I-295 is like 10 lanes now and it still backs up!
Great piece. Does anyone know what was the "world's largest factory under one roof"?
I love it when people complain about traffic here ;D
True. I-4 is a mess in Orlando and I-95 is pretty horrible in Miami. Even if you think that's bad, try getting stuck in rush hour traffic in LA, Atlanta or Chicago!
As for world's largest factory under one roof, that has to be inaccurate. Nothing in Jax historically has rivaled the size of the early 20th century auto assembly plants around Detroit.
As bad as it is perceived here... traffic really is not that bad here... I used to commute from San Jose to Mountain View Ca down lovely highway 101 or as sometimes known as 1 oh fun... ugh... :o
Traffic is not bad here. People are terrible drivers in Jacksonville making a commute more stressful.

Yeah, I wasn't buying that. Maybe it was referring to Swisher's claim of the world's largest cigar factory?
