During the 20 years following the creation of the country's first enclosed regional mall in 1956, so many were built in Florida that they started to cannibalize each other. Here's a walk down memory lane at ten once popular enclosed malls around the state that don't exist anymore. Let's see how many you remember.

The first picture for Colonial Plaza in Orlando is actually Gateway Mall in Jacksonville. Colonial Plaza never had a Penneys.

That's the heading for the Colonial Plaza section. The Gateway Mall image is the article title image. I went back and added some spacing to eliminate the confusion.

The former Clearwater Mall, located at the intersection of US 19 and Gulf to Bay Blvd was converted to a "power center" in the 90's also.

Tampa Bay Center looks a lot like Governor's Square in Tallahassee, which I believe also caught heat for closing early one year for FAMU homecoming.

I spent many summer days in the late 80's/early 90's with my grandparents at the Clearwater Mall. And at the Pinellas Square Mall.

Both were Rouse centers.
