JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Senator Bill Nelson wants an aircraft carrier to come to Mayport as soon as possible.  The U.S. Navy is considering moving a carrier from Norfolk, Virginia to Mayport.

The only thing holding up the transfer is the fact that Mayport is not yet a nuclear-powered base.  But Senator Nelson says that will soon change.  He says once an environmental study is completed in December, construction can move forward.

Nelson says it just makes sense to move a carrier to Jacksonville.  He says, "The whole Atlantic Fleet is in Norfolk. Of course, the lessons of Pearl Harbor tell us you've got to disperse your fleet. You don't want all your assets in one home port."

Senator Nelson hopes to bring the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush to Mayport.  The carrier has been commissioned, but not yet home-ported.

NICE!!!!  Get that thing here already!

Could Mayport going nuclear help to move along nuclear power in the private sector?

It could in some ways, but more than anything, it'll really boost the economy of Mayport Village, and the City of Atlantic Beach nicely. The drawback, get ready for backups from the Main Gate all the way to the Kangaroo station if this happens.

This is the carrier the base has been really garnering for the most. If not this one, then the Gerald Ford would be the next candidate. Yet, considering the environmental study will probably be good, I expect to almost bank of this baby movin in!

USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and last Nimitz class supercarrier of the United States Navy. She is named for former President George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. George H. W. Bush is to be the final Nimitz class aircraft carrier constructed; the next carrier built will be Gerald R. Ford, the first of a new class.

She is the second United States aircraft carrier to be named after a naval aviator (Forrestal was the first). Other naval vessels named for aviators include frigates McClusky and Thach, and destroyer Massey, all named for aviators who commanded formations in the Battle of Midway. George H.W. Bush is also the second aircraft carrier, following Reagan, to be named after a living former President. While still a Nimitz class ship, George H. W. Bush differs significantly from her predecessors, even more so than the differences between CVN 68â€"70 and CVN 71â€"76.

Construction began in 2001 by the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard, at a cost of $4.5 billion.  The aircraft carrier was christened on 7 October 2006, and delivery is set for 2008. She is scheduled to be commissioned in 2009.
Best bet for us, since the Ford hasn't even been laid down yet, and won't be commissioned until at least 2015.
