Abandoned in 1999, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church is one of the largest buildings still standing in Brooklyn, that date back to the Jacksonville neighborhood's days before demolition and gentrification. Now plans are underway by Bedopas LLC to convert the former sanctuary into one of the city's most interesting craft breweries.

It's been nice to see articles being posted more regularly!
This is fantastic!
But I do have a question: A developer is renovating the site in hopes for it to be used as a brewery? Its not a new brewer opening a new operation? In either case we don't know who the brewer is yet?

I believe they have a tenant lined up, and it's someone who was already looking to start up. But yes, the developer is driving this project as opposed to other recent breweries who took the lead or built their own space.
I love it! Did they present a time frame?
Damn Max, we missed our chance!!
That is just warped. Better to tear down the church and start from scratch. Have no problem with that. But have some respect for the buildings former use, please.
What's wrong with the building becoming a brewery? Religion abandoned the structure and neighborhood for greener pastures decades ago. This isn't like the church in Lavilla that became a brothel after the congregation moved out in the early 20th century.
Pretty sure Jesus endorsed the drinking of wine??????

Strange response. Old churches are often used for many other types of business.

Churches have been brewing beer and making wine for centuries.
Look at all the nearby property that this developer owns. What are their plans for that? Any thoughts?
Most likely a mix of adaptive reuse and new construction mixed use infill. Basically what the church brewery project is. Judging at the size of the properties, the larger sites will likely end up as multifamily around the same scale as Brooklyn Riverside. Most of the buildings on their properties have already been demolished.
Can we get a map of the properties this company owns for reference?

Thank You
^That's a lot of land, including up in the (already highly depilated) residential zone northwest of Chelsea. I guess redevelopment is coming there too before long, as was assumed.
whats a shame is the plan to have a giant white brewery tank sticking out of top of building, it looks hideous and makes me question what the renovation is gonna be like.
^It looks cool, if that's even the direction they decide to go in. Probably depends on the equipment they get.
