Just saw the most interesting Request for Proposals (RFP) on MSN.com.

Jeff Bezos and Amazon are searching for a second North American Headquarters.  I cannot think of a better place than Jacksonville. So I wrote him and sent a letter to the e-mail address provided.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/amazon-is-searching-for-a-second-headquarters-city-in-north-america/ar-AArrWqI?li=BBnbfcL

I strongly urge any bloggers here who have connections at the CoC or City Hall to get them to review the docs and submit on Jacksonville's behalf.   This would be the ultimate "game changer" for Jax.

Thanks!

Why would Jacksonville be a good place for Amazon other than you want them here?

Go read the RFP. (Did you?) We are a very good fit, and it would impact our local economy in a good way. Obviously they see us as a good place for regional shipping centers ("fulfillment centers?").  So why not North American Head Quarters?

I actually got an e-mail response from a "real person" at Amazon.

Your question is typical of the folks who said, "Why would an NFL franchise want to come here?"  Well it did and although the team has had limited success on the field it has brought a lot of PR to our city, as well as a Super Bowl.  Of course Amazon proposes to employ 50,000 people where ever it locates this HQ so it's way bigger than an NFL franchise. My feeling is that if anyone ever wants this town to live up to it's fullest potential then you have to try and convince a corporation like Amazon to bring their HQ here.

Just give them the old JEA site on the south bank.

It's pretty much spoken for, but there are so many possibilities here, and the cost of real estate in Jax is way less than other major metro areas, I can't help but think they would give us a serious look.   Shad Khan and Jeff Bezos partnering to build out the ShipYards is more than one could hope for.....  Give him the old courthouse site for free if he'll do it!

They list 4 things they want.... We lack 2 of them..

-Urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent
-Communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options

We don't really have an international airport.  We don't have a mass transit network that would meet their needs.

Sure this would be great for Jacksonville, but it would not be great for Amazon.  The Jags probably would have been better off elsewhere too.

" The Jags probably would have been better off elsewhere too."  Sure. Like Savannah.

The 2 "things" are pretty easy to remedy once the announcement is made.  Re-routing International flights from Orlando is attainable.

We are moving in the right direction and our real estate options cannot be beat.

It would be easier for them to go to Orlando then get flights rerouted from MCO to JAX. Our transit system isn't reliable, our higher education component leaves a lot to be desired and we have a freaking confederate monument welcoming people to the front door of city hall. With that said, although our chances of success may be less than a snowball's chance of surviving a night in hell, we should at least inquire.  The worse they can say is no. I can see every place in Florida losing out when some of these other states start tossing out their crazy incentives packages.

Florida in general can't match other states incentive packages. Boeing received in tax credits, grants ad other incentives close to $900 million. almost all the dollars required to build the initial plant. I imagine Amazon wants north of $1 billion.

100 acres of greenfield space,  un-developed land?  Yeah, that exists in pretty much every major city in the US.  (LOL)

FYI: The Shipyards is 70 acres, correct?
Title: Re: Urban Construction Update - August 2017
Post by: thelakelander on September 08, 2017, 06:27:48 PM
I think the Shipyards is closer to 40 acres but its not development ready. Lots of cities have brownfields, closed urban core industrial and redevelopment sites similar to the Shipyards. For example, there's the Brooklyn Naval Yard in NYC and the Water Street project in Tampa. Orlando has a 68-acre site with its proposed Creative Village.  Even Philly has a massive infill development being proposed called Schuylkill Yards.

Had to skip September. I'm like Project Maximus right now. I'm working full time in Orlando for a few months and splitting time between there and Jax. The one Saturday marked for the construction update ended being rained out.

Oh, that must be what I saw. Thanks. They were moving dirt around when I drove by. For some reason I had merged that project with Houston Street Manor in my head.

Yes, according to today's Jax Daily Record, their permit to start was recently approved. So another decent sized multifamily project is now under construction.

Thanks.

and since I will be losing, just let me know who to donate to.....

That is noble of you to stick by your team when the ship is sinking. I choose the Ritz Chamber Music Society:

QuoteSpeaking of Atlantic North, MedExpress is building a standalone urgent care center there at the corner of Atlantic and Kernan. No timeline has been given for its construction or opening, but CCS Construction has the contract for the $750,000, 4,564-square-foot building.

MedExpress already has one location under construction at 7720 Merrill Road, where an Arthur Murray Dance Studio once stood. That will open Aug. 23. The company is planning a third Jacksonville location downtown, but has not released that address.

All clinics will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week and offer a variety of urgent care, employer health, basic wellness and prevention services.

They employ about 20 people at each location.

Atlantic North is anchored by Belk, Earth Fare, Academy Sports + Outdoors and L.A. Fitness.
