KTC Jacksonville 2008 Meditation-A-Thon
"Meditation for Peace"
The Meditation-A-Thon is an effort to create a more peaceful world and provide awareness to the benefits of meditation. The event is a coordinated effort being undertaken by Karma Thegsum Chöling Jacksonville and Lama Tsultrim Khandro. Lama Khandro is a Tibetan Buddhist Lama, or teacher, who has recently returned to KTC Jacksonville to serve as our spiritual director.
The KTC Jacksonville Meditation-A-Thon will be taking place October 25-26 at Riverside Park from 9am until 5pm. During the course of the two days at least one participant will be meditating throughout the day. Literature on Buddhism and meditation will be provided free of charge, as will meditation instruction at selected times. Lama Khandro will be teaching from a rich tradition of effective meditative practices and teachings designed to cultivate peace for the benefit of oneself and others, thus ultimately benefiting the world.
According to Buddhist teachings, peace in our world is directly related to the peace found within its inhabitants. A peaceful world, therefore, is possible only when we are peaceful as individuals. By coming together and meditating together, we are learning how to be more peaceful, together.
In addition to providing education and creating awareness about the benefits of meditation, the event also aims to help raise funds for local KTC Jacksonville Buddhist center. By providing support to KTC Jacksonville the center can continue its mission of peace by providing free services to the community.

My bet would be none, but you forget the real reason for the event. They all felt better about themselves and it took no effort
We had folks meditating almost the whole time, closed up a little early Saturday because it was a bit cold.
Events like this spread peace through education and awareness of the benefits of meditation. The more people that learn and practice meditation in turn can become more peaceful, this in turn spreads peace.
BTW we brought 30 cushions, mats and chairs to the park in addition to setting up a tent and providing food and water to mediators. I invite you to come to center one day and try doing 15 minutes of meditation and you might have a different feeling about it afterword's. :)

And what would be the point? Would the sudanese governement kill less than they have before? Would the war in the congo become less violent. Would the palestinian/Israeli conflict become less violent. Please just tell me what you what to accomplish? Your meditation session involving no one that are pursuing the violence in the world is fine, I have no problem with a quite meditation on a mat, have enjoyed the peace and silence. tbut the delusional attitude that you have any effect on the real world should be insulting to you..
I don't think the goal is to evoke world peace by one gathering; rather, the idea that we are all interconnected can bring about change. We hear about one vote making a difference, even how smiling and acting positively to a stranger.
With one person learning to be at peace with him/herself, that in turn can positively affect all he/she interacts with and thus sets off a chain reaction.
Let's leave the hyperbolic snarkiness out of this. If you don't like it, try not to attack someone for trying to make a small difference.
Perhaps you should try meditation to diffuse such hostility.

It was neither snakiness or hostility i and trust me I am far kinder to individuals than most people I have met.
But the statement stands, its an event to allow individuals make minimal effort to make themselves feel better about themselves The idea of meditating for peace and understanding is ludicrous. Passive actions will not lead to that but only positive ones. In other words drag your butts out of your houses and actually help people, not set in a park and chant. Ahhhhhhhhh raisng funds sorry I missed that.

Best of luck with you for that you, I may be wrong. I never want people to take this too seriously. I have severe disagreements with you. Primary problem with that is our views is that the disagreement could cause a lot of deaths. i am familiar with the Buddisht philosilphy and simply don't agree with it, guess too western. My main objection is not the idea of what your doing is the pretense of it, public posing changes nothing , the wars continue, the deaths continue, the oppression continues, no matter how hard you meditate, I should have made that more clear initially and apologize. I have always stated on this website i leave my dumb posts up for ridicule.
I understand what you are saying, but the focus is not on meditation. That is only the vehicle through which to attain the individual goal--individual peace.
I agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with that at all.
I will close by saying the west is relatively young and that civilizations rooted in Buddhist philosophy have prospered, fallen and rebuilt. Our relative youthful society will have its moment of decline.

Meditating is good for you, it will change you for the better.....many on here should try and I should get back to a normal schedule ;D
I for one applaud the effort. At least they were thinking of world peace and positive thoughts rather than yakking endlessly on a cell phone, gazing blindly at a TV, texting some meaningless message...etc, etc... :)
