Amazon is not the only one hosting job fairs across greater Jacksonville.
The Jaguars will be hosting a job fair tomorrow in the Club Suites to fill 1000 part time positions. (4-8pm)
Amazon job seeker turnout has been much greater than anticipated. Still to host at Prime Osborn, turnouts at UNF and the Legends Center have exceeded expectations.
While the appeal to "start over" in a career is driving many to Amazon, the healthy benefits that start on Day 1 of employment is a large inducement to apply.
Can't say I have seen so much job activity in Jacksonville since I moved here 13 years ago. I hope it sticks and lasts awhile. Its mass employment at this level that really drives a local economy.

Amazon warehouse jobs are shit jobs and we should not be celebrating these as economic progress.
There's plenty to criticize Amazon for, but I think that's a bit unfair. I used to work in Career Services at UNF. Amazon has other jobs locally besides the warehouses. And the warehouses pay better than other similar jobs, have benefits, and a good safety record. Especially for folks without diplomas, it's a better gig than many (I'd certainly take it over the tire warehouse job I had in high school).
My cousin took one of those "low-end" jobs in the Amazon warehouse with a HS diploma. He has been promoted twice, recognized by one of Amazon's logistics partners as a valued resource and now has a much better role now.
The point is, he had to prove he could handle the $%)# job, before they gave him the better one.
A way better opportunity to move up than flipping burgers at Hardee's!
Its a matter of perspective. If I needed a job, I would lift boxes at Amazon if it meant it would give me a chance to move up in the company.
The upside is much better.

Ah, the bootstrapping bootstrapper! Truly the American conservative's dream. Which ignores completely that lifting boxes isnt what makes this job shitty, and that being promoted from low-shit position to higher shit position in no way makes these shitty jobs less shitty. Do some reading of the many, many articles, interviewing many, many people, who have worked for Amazon and describe the very shitty conditions...which Amazon absolutely could afford to rectify, but doesn't. But, hey, your cousin got a promotion, so there's that!
All warehouse jobs look shitty from the perspective of people who don't have to do them. For those who do, in comparison to other warehouse jobs, Amazon is favorable in several ways. There are also non-warehouse jobs and chances for upward mobility as Spuwho said.
Is it possible we could see unemployment in Jax get below 3% by this time next year? Imagine the implications for northwest Jax if unemployment started rapidly falling there. What would happen to 32254 if unemployment fell to 6% there?
It will be interesting to see how the effects of these massive hiring sprees will be distributed among the various zip codes in Jax. Hopefully the warehouses aren't primarily staffed with people commuting from the south side of town.
I wonder what are the perks of being an Amazon employee. Free Prime membership and streaming
It's not a bad job for part-timers. You can work your way up the ladder
4,000 Amazon jobs is far better than 4,000 jobs leaving. And not every new job needs to be nor should be a high paying/high requirement job. We need this range.
Amazon has cancelled all but one remaining job fair due to the overwhelming response of applicants.
I love it when people think I can be classified because I take a positive approach to a job search.
Amazon announced a new mega warehouse to be built at Lake Nona Florida.
