1. People in public positions shouldn't be "debating" (and I use that word verrrry loosely) issues relating to that public position on freaking Facebook.
2. That said, there's nothing objectionable about saying that "Fuck the police" is protected speech. It is. The fact that such a statement is apparently now grounds for dismissing someone from a public post is scary and foreboding.
Protected speech, yes.
Appropriate speech for a public position, no.

Correct. It calls her judgment into question, especially since it has every appearance of being a case of sour grapes (https://www.facebook.com/diane.melendez.12/posts/10212566667224618?comment_id=10212569919865932&reply_comment_id=10212580947021604¬if_t=mentions_comment¬if_id=1492534168676191) after the union endorsed Kim Daniels instead of her in the State House race.
BTW, she lost handily in that House race to Kim "Demonbuster" Daniels, who was fresh off her own embarrassing City Council loss. These are the kind of candidates the Duval DNC fields.

You guys are completely missing the point. Jean-Bart, regardless of her qualifications as a candidate, said she wouldn't object to someone saying "fuck the police" because it is protected speech. She didn't say, herself, "Fuck the police", or say it was ok or anything like that. She simply said that to use such words is protected speech, which it is.
And you're missing the real point, which is that while trying to get an appointment on the city ethics commission, she engaged in a Facebook dispute that attracted media attention against a union rep who she has previously blasted for endorsing her opponent in an earlier political race; in this dispute she made a point of rationalizing anti-police speech, among other things, none of which say much in favor of her professional judgment.
Edited to a more correct analogy:
Telling your employer that you agree with a coworker's right to say that the boss, "Can go fuck himself in the ear." is also protected speech, but I'm not sure your employment is as protected.
Boring, repetitive synopsis:
Speech is protected; Consequences from speech, not so much.
^Yeah, it really is that.

Again, you miss the point. She did not say, "Fuck the police" she said, "saying 'fuck the police' is protected speech and so I won't condemn it." It's a different. Either way, I am sick of this fucking "you can't criticize the cops; BLM are the real problem" fucking bullshit, and this is just another part of that mentality. If she had come out and said, "Fuck the police" or " I agree with the other lady who said fuck the police", that would be one thing, but that didn't happen. And, yes, I am a firm believer in the "you have free speech, but you must also bear the consequences of that speech", whether it's Sarah Palin or Colin Kaeprnick getting shit on for their exercise of free speech. But this situation aint that.
Bad analogy. Original post corrected.
