Kelly Key, Amy Tucker and Leslie Faircloth will see a dream come true Saturday, June 9. That's the day they'll open Samadhi, a Murray Hill dance studio that bears the name of their group.

Key, a Riverside resident, along with Tucker and Faircloth, Mandarin residents, will continue to specialize in the dance they love most: American tribal bellydancing.

The word samadhi means a state of intense bliss, which is what the dancers say they achieve while engaged in the art form that brings them such pleasure.

"I fell in love with bellydancing the first time I saw it performed," Key said.

Faircloth said she got hooked after starting to bellydance to get in shape. Tucker, like Faircloth, is trained in other types of dance, but said she finds bellydancing an expressive, empowering and creative activity women of any age can enjoy.

Samadhi has long been in demand all over town for corporate events and gatherings such as wedding and baby showers, birthday parties for children and adults, receptions and private classes.

"It's a very multicultural art form that everyone from Twiggy to goddess size can enjoy," Tucker said. "We only do women's or coed events, nothing that is all-male."

At their new studio, the ladies will hold classes for all ages, including a children's belly dancing troupe.

"The kids are covered from head to toe during performances," Tucker said, pointing to her 10-year-old costume-clad daughter, a dancer and member of the Johara children's group.

Tucker said all four of her children love to dance. Key, mother of twin girls and a son, said her children also like to be involved.

"Especially playing the drums," she added.

Adults and children can see and sample all kinds of dance June 9 and they can do it all free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Samadhi's new 3,000-square-foot dance studio at 1022 Edgewood Ave. S.

"That night we'll be holding a hafla" - a dance and drum party that will include great food, a variety of entertainment and music. "It should be a fun, festive time."

they didn't mention that they have hookahs and beer during their haflas.  i went to the first one and there were a lot of people there.  they also had a lot of ice cream left in the freezer from whatever used to be there, but that's probably gone by now.
