UPDATE: Jacksonville police shoot carjacking suspect; 2008 police shootings eclipse 2007 total
Posted: Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Jacksonville police shot a man Wednesday who fled from a stolen vehicle, authorities said.

Chief Rick Graham of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said two officers were on patrol near Emerson Street when they spotted a suspicious vehicle with four passengers. The officers ran the plate and identified the car as having been stolen about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

They followed the vehicle through the 3400 block of Bark Street when the passengers abruptly opened all car doors and fled.

The officers pursued the passengers on foot. Officer Adam Hiers was following one of the passengers behind a house when he fired one shot, Graham said. The suspect was struck once and taken to Shands Jacksonville with what Graham described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Police detained one of the passengers, but they are still looking for the other two. Graham said it was unknown if any of the passengers were carrying weapons.

This is the 20th police shooting this year, surpassing the 2007 total of 19.
