Hey! Has anybody heard any talk about possible new development at the Heart of Jax site at Main & State Streets? It would be a good site for another high rise hotel or other residential type structure.
Nope...

Well, I saw a for sale sign on it recently. Maybe someone will take a chance on it. It's on the route from the stadium, close to FSCJ, confederate park etc., nice site.

LOL
LOL ? Maybe, but I'm now seeing rezoning signs on this property, so something's up. Has anyone heard what might be happening to this old hotel site?
It's listed for sale on Loopnet.com for $2,750,000. NAI Hallmark Partners. Don't know anything about change in zoning.
I think it may be under contract.
What makes you think that? Do you know the offeror? Or Seller?

The LOL is from the way Lakelander said, "Nope." Real quick and dirty. Don't take it personal.
It has been many years ago now, but here was a high rise mixed use residential proposal for this site at one time. It looked fantastic. Of course, no body got their hopes up which was wise.

Not at all heights unknown. My sense of humor is still in tact. I've always liked the site and the potential it has to energize that area with some nice high rise or something. The former proposal vicupstate describes in response # 9 would be nice to reconsider.
Quotehe former Park View Inn at 901 N. Main St. is in for rezoning to develop a four-story, multifamily building with 82 units above structured parking and for off-street parking.
Applicant Jacksonville Hospitality Holdings LP wants to rezone about 1.52 acres from CCG-2 to PUD.
The site has been vacant since 2003 other than a partial parking structure there since the rest of the site was demolished in 2011.
Southport Development Inc. is listed as the developer.
A preliminary site plan by civil engineer England, Thims & Miller Inc. shows the multifamily project would be developed at State and Main streets.
"Future development" is shown along Orange and Ocean streets and Ocean and State streets.

On a side note, I seem to get inconsistent news updates between my facebook Jax Daily Record and the actual site.

Thanks for that information. I remember the Park View Hotel name, but I thought it was also called the Heart of Jax Hotel years ago. If not, then where was the HOJ Hotel? Anyway, residential would be nice for the site, but I wish it would be taller. These 4 & 5 story buildings don' t do much for the city's skyline, a skyline needing all the high rises it can get.
I also think it was originally Heart of Jacksonville . I may have seen a Spottswood Collection photo showing buildings on the site housing car dealerships.
Being a little older probably than most of you, yes, it was the Heart of Jacksonville Hotel for many years. Stayed there many a day during my 20 year Navy career, in the 70's, and 80's when stationed in Jacksonville. Then it was the Parkview Inn. After that it stayed empty for a long time with drug dealers, addicts, and the homeless staying in the rooms while abandoned.

Thanks for that historical account. Yes, that building suffered the same fate as several other downtown properties did, with drug dealers , homeless etc.; lets hope the new facility will be something we can all be proud of as it makes a long-lived contribution to downtown.
I think it will HOWFAM, I think it will. Jacksonville is changing, finally, ashamed she's changing at a time that I am getting old. I used to hope, when I was younger and you guys' age, that it would spring up and spring back quickly like it finally and now is. Better late than never huh? Just hope we don't get nuked or something, then it's all out the window; "BIG JAX" will be one of the first that they hit unfortunately with the military "plex" here (minus one with cecil going in 99). Hope all the new projects continue forward and come to fruition.

Heights Unknown: I hope you and everyone on the forum got through the hurricane safely. Good post. Yes, it's finally happening for "Big Jax". However we must be vigilant in watching who we elect to public office. Just one or two of the "old school good ol' boys" who want to turn the clocks back can spell the end to our forward progress (politically nuked). Lets hope and pray that projects like "The District" , and "The Shipyards" are completed as planned, and I'm sure they will encourage similar developments in downtown.
