Title: Dan TDM comes to Jax!!
Post by: spuwho on March 31, 2017, 12:15:12 PM
In the world of gaming there is a large following on YouTube  for certain personalities.

One of the larger ones is Dan TDM, who will be appearing at Daily's Place in July.

Most people say, what does a video gamer do in a large auditorium?

Apparently they set up these large screens and he games live and provides commentary just like he does on YouTube.

His date in Orlando at Walt Disney Theatre sold out already.

Now they are on sale in Jacksonville.

Dan TDM and Popular MMO's (Pat and Jen) have pretty much replaced cartoons for kids now. And don t think its a charity. Pat and Jen (based in Vero Beach) make well into 6 figures off the revenue they generate on youTube.

Dan TDM just signed a publishing deal with HarperCollins to write a series of sciFi books. No one can confirm it, but they estimate he also makes mid 6 figures from his YouTube channel.

Its a new era in kids entertainment and new niche that is coming about. And these "kids' creating the content are still in their 20's.

My wife just came into my office shocked at the prices of these tickets.  For the 4 of us to go and sit in the nosebleeds is just north of $200 after fees.

Just about everyone has flipped out on ticket prices at Daily's Place. I dont think its just about the content.

I have looked over the artists lined up so far and when I ask around to see who wants to go, they all cough when they see the ticket prices.

This is kind of why bands from the 80/90's "team up" on their tours now to get bigger venues. Bigger venues mean more ancillary sales (like tshirts etc).

As far as Dan TDM goes, he already has a pretty healthy logo licensing deal for tshirts, mugs, and other kotchkies that kids love. So look for lots of merchandising sales at this event.

I like jokes as much as the next guy but...

First, April 1st is TOMORROW.

Second, if you want the joke to work, it has to be somewhat believable.

C'mon, people. Step it up.

Unless....no...it can't be....this is actually...stop....no way

Sounds like you just volunteered to watch my 9 and 12 year old this Saturday.  Thanks.

After you learn more about DanDTM and some of the other YT Personalities, maybe they can give you the nickle tour through Minecraft, John Cena memes and Yo Kai Watch.

Nyan Cat.... can't forget Nyan cat.

I'll drop them off at 9ish?

Per Tubefilter:

Dan 'DanTDM' Middleton Is Bringing His Sold-Out Tour Stateside

Popular gaming creator — and newly crowned YouTube Red series headliner — Dan 'DanTDM' Middleton is bringing his massively successful tour across the pond. Kicking off in Boston on March 24, Middleton will hit 21 U.S. cities, wrapping up in San Francisco in May.

DanTDM On Tour is being produced by Endemol Shine UK, the management agency OP Talent, and live events company Live Nation Entertainment. The family-friendly show features games, puzzles, and appearances from Middleton's pet pugs as well as other characters from his YouTube channel. When it kicked off in the UK last summer, tickets sold out in a matter of 24 hours, and Middleton also played four sold-out shows at the Sydney Opera House in December.

"My American audience has always supported me and this tour is a brilliant opportunity for me to bring my world to life for them," Middleton, who counts more than 16.5 million subscribers and nearly 10 billion views across his two YouTube channels, said in a statement. "I can't wait to travel across the country and meet as many fans as possible."

Added Tom Greenwood-Mears, head of live events for Endemol Shine UK: "The tour has been really well received in the UK and Sydney, by kids and parents alike, so we are extremely excited to take it to Dan's largest market, the US."

Pat & Jen (Popular MMO's) even have their merch store set up to make more dough off their YouTube popularity.

GameStop sells these too.

https://represent.com/store/popularmmos (https://represent.com/store/popularmmos)

Here is Pat (who body builds when not making gaming videos)

and his wife Jen

Their channel lit up with record watches last week as Jen announced she is pregnant.  The kids are really tied up in this stuff, I am not making it up even though April 1 is tomorrow. No announcements if the birth will be over YouTube, (and now I am joking)

I wouldn't be shocked if they drive over to Orlando to see DanTDM's show.

Watching people play video games is legit, and has been around as long as video games have. Literally millions of people do it, and some even prefer to experience games that way. Some YouTubers have just found a way to monetize the passtime by recording themselves playing in an (ostensibly) entertaining fashion online. What's most striking about it all is that it's only been in the last 10 years that people could make money at it. Even there, only a fraction of creators make real money, despite the many millions of people who watch the videos.

The global popularity of Minecraft has facilitated this no doubt.

Minecon, the annual convention for Minecraft fans sold out 12,000 tickets in Anaheim in 5 minutes.

Before that it was in London, and it sold out in a similar fashion.  The promoters won't (can't) expand it. Too hard to manage they say.

Can you imagine if they "opened it up" and had it Orlando? Geez, talk about a international mob scene!

This is the affinity stuff that I think Jacksonville should foster in any future con center plans.

Not Minecon per se, but these niche sub-cultures that Finehoe mentioned.  Leave the ComicCon's to San Diego and Minecon's to the rest of the world. Go after the 2nd a 3rd tier shows that cater to similar but smaller crowds.

If DanTDM can sell 8-9,000 seats to watch him game, think how many would come to a "MineJax" event?

I just discovered that Dan TDM is apparently the source of my dog's original name. When we got him from the foster family he was named Trayaurus; we changed his name when we brought him home. We were told Trayaurus was some Minecraft reference but I never knew what it was; apparently it's a character of Dan TDM. This dude has even written books (https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062574329/dantdm-trayaurus-and-the-enchanted-crystal) about Trayaurus. What a world.

All things considered at least I dont have to worry about Dan dropping anti-Semitic references or far right comments into his videos, which, in this day, is no small measure of relief.

Right now MMR, anything that doesn't have a anti-anything or any political statement would be welcomed.

I honestly don't follow. His comment was in response to the Gators beating Wisconsin. In a basketball game. He's a known lover of college football, too.

WTF are you talking about? I have never watched an English Premier League game in my life, though i do enjoy soccer, like I enjoy almost all sports; I especially love the Gators, as my original post about their win over Wisconsin referenced.  And your absolutely out-of-touch stereotyping of progressives is completely without basis and just wrong; pretty much every left-leaning person I know, which is a lot, enjoys college sports and the Jaguars.  Just bceuase someone like me points out (correctly) that the NFL is a scam, doesnt mean 1) I dont like sports or 2) serve as a basis for stereotyping literally hundreds of millions of people.

Anyway, let's talk Dan TDM.

Sorry to bring you into this, but when spuwho posted that, I immediately remembered your enthusiastic post about the Gators.

I am checking out Dailys Place here at the DanTDM event.

I have met people from NYC, Atlanta, a large contingent from Tallahassee, people are saying the samething, "I didnt know Jacksonville had this place".

Depends on what is showing, but I say kudos to the Jags and  COJ. People are flying in and staying at hotels to come to Dailys.

Lets hope it continues!!

While the kids thought it was incredible, I thought on I would provide some low level feedback on Daily's Place and the danTDM event.

Unfortunately the TStorms rolled in during the meet and greet. When the greet was over and the rain, they made everyone leave.

We asked if we could stay and just eat from the Daily's Food Bar at the venue. (Since we had tickets)

The answer was "No" for 2 reasons. Everyone with tix for the event had to be scanned at the entrance, and the gate didnt open until 630.

Also, Daily's food bar didnt open until 630 as well.

So it was either sit in the car and wait hungry, or find a local establishment.

As you are aware, there are zero establishments around the stadium district,  so it came to either the Bay Street (ie: Elements) or the Landing.

I was out voted and the Landing it was. We parked at the Paramore Garage. Honestly, its across the street and no big deal to walk across.

Oddly, many other parents were looking for food for the same reasons. 2 parents commented, "I havent been in the Landing in over 4 years" and the spouse said, "because there is nothing here". I thought it was an echo.

We ended up at Chicago Pizza. The food and service were ok, but it seems absolutely nothing has been done inside since it was a Friday's.

Meanwhile, back to the event.

Parking is included in your tix and I parked by the exit to get out faster.

Inside, the seats and sight lines are great. But by around 8pm, the humidity and lack of air movement under the roof made it stifling. By the end of the show at 930, many kids were kinda glossy eyed from the lateness and heat. The bathrooms were roasting.

Nice place, great event.

A few more tweaks here and there.

As for DanTDM, it was what we expected. Cute, original and all the kids loved it. He is a very nice guy and has a lot of heart for kids.

I get it, but I'm likely younger than many of you. If you think about it, it's no different than going to watch a sporting event. People are playing a game and you are watching them do it. Only this is better, because the person playing the game is able to talk to you and entertain you. The people that actually make money at this are the ones that have an entertainer personality or are independently entertaining (without the game).

Having said that, although I watch people play games on Twitch/YouTube occasionally, I wouldn't personally pay to see someone do it live. Also, I've never heard of this Dan guy, but that doesn't mean much either because I am likely older than his target audience.

Actually there is more to it.

The drama "line" as such is that DanTDM has an evil twin (EvilDan) who constantly is attempting to make DanTDM look bad in games and life.

So to make an example out of him EvilDan steals his two pugs and holds them hostage.  EvilDan provides a game map (think Minecraft here) that DanTDM and the audience must solve in order to defeat the evil twin and get the pugs freed from from captivity.

So as part of the adventure, DanTDM pulls select kids from the crowd to come on stage, grab a controller and play these custom games to defeat EvilDan.

The games were essentially clones of popular games, like PacMan, Roblox, etc. and with DanTDM's help, the kids victory was one step in solving the map and releasing the pugs.

The final scene is a "virtual" fight between DanTDM and EvilDan on the big screen with effects.

Interspersed between the games were psuedo live sessions where DanTDM would show you things about himself, where he live in the UK, where he made his game videos, his wife, etc.  Of couple of funny moments is where he went through the crowd with a GoPro on his head while it displayed on the big screen, playing a guitar and singing a song, and chatting with his helper.

The kids in the crowd ate it all up. They loved it.

My wife and I couldn't tell from outside driving by if Intuition was serving any food yet.  We discussed seeing if the pub next to the coliseum was open, but there was a huge Jehovah Witness conference going on there and people were streaming out, so we bailed and headed to the urban core. I was fine with Fionn McCools or Elements, but I got the family veto.  Until next time!! But i would say opportunities await.  If the Shipyards goes through i could easily see a hotel and food choices doing well across the street from Daily's.

Popular Mechanics Magazine has had a video crew following DanTDM on the entire tour, interviewing kids etc.  So my son wanted to be a part of it and will be appearing on PM's online site soon. Why Popular Mechanics?  Isn't that the mag you find at the table in a barber shop ?  So the Jags had a PR person there supervising.

The Jaguars also had a group of kids working the adults offering a drawing for free Jags tickets.

Where is the money?  The merchandise!  DanTDM Tour hats, posters, lanyards, tshirts, stuffed animals of this pugs, just about anything he has created on his YouTube Channel, you could buy something related to it.

Since his book deal with HarperCollins, and the popularity of his tour, estimates of his income have gone up to around $2 million annually.

While he said nothing of it, rumor is that there is a DanTDM adventure movie in the works.

All of this because he wanted to share his gaming on line!

The apocalypse draws ever nearer   ;D

remc86007:
If you think about it, it's no different than going to watch a sporting event.

It strikes me as seriously different with only some tangential similarity. One is an unscripted athletic competition involving either individual or team effort, the other is a manufactured *and* scripted event involving . . . (spuwho) . . . a dramatic script ? ? ? As such, it's remarkably passive. Isn't it? Making it more like a night at the (amphi)theater?

And with that I think I just clarified things in my head. So, hell, to each his own. A very happy 4th to one and all.

^Happy fourth.

I don't know about Dan, but the vast majority of game streamers are literally playing games live. There is nothing scripted about it. Often they play multiplayer games against other teams of players. Also, it may not involve physical strength, but it is an exercise of precision, decision making, teamwork, and speed.

During a trip to Seattle last year I was exposed to this type of gaming event as several teams were staying at our hotel.

Had no idea that gaming had become a spectator sport, but apparently ESPN is dabbling in the live gaming coverage.

It has really exploded in Asia, but there is some presence of competitive gaming in the US. Some games require a very high number of inputs to be competitive. Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbpCLqryN-Q

Even though watching gaming tournaments doesn't personally interest me, I think of it as a natural progression from watching less sophisticated activities (the physical kind) to watching more sophisticated activities that require more mental acuity. If 100 years from now, people are still paying to watch grown men tackle each other I'd be surprised. I enjoy a good Jags game (when they occasionally occur) but I wouldn't be heartbroken if our current sports evolved into something a little more sophisticated.

I'm going to stop now before I piss too many sports fans off or further derail this thread haha

Sounds like the sort of thing that should be on "The Ocho".

From Spuwho's description it sounds like this was more of a performance than live gaming. Probably makes sense for something he's got to do in front of an audience like 40 times in one summer.

Wise, wise decision. My inner neanderthal had already received the wait, wut; I pity the fool alert   ;-)

I hope everyone had or is having a great 4th of July.

I just conversed with some folk who went to the Chicago/Doobie Bros gig at Dailys.

Sideways rain delayed the concert followed by oppressive heat under the roof with no breeze.

Me thinks the Jags will install some of those quiet blowers and put them under the first balcony.

They use something similar at Chase Field in Phoenix when the roof opens.

At a minimum it will keep the air flowing and stop the oppressive heat on the main floor.
