Title: Another Amazon center? Meeting sought with city to discuss permitting
Post by: thelakelander on March 07, 2017, 05:07:43 PM
It appears Amazon could be opening a sortation center to support its local fulfillment centers:

Amazon.com might not be finished yet developing new centers in Jacksonville.
An Amazon executive sought a meeting with city building officials to talk about permitting an existing building for the company.

However, the executive, Steve Bear, canceled it and will reschedule later, according to city e-mails in late February. The location and type of center was not included.

Bear wanted to phase the work. The facility was described to be mostly automated and would need electrical, HVAC, conveyor, automation and racking systems.

With two large fulfillment centers under development and a 63,000-square-foot delivery station approved for build-out in Jacksonville, it appears an additional facility could be a sortation center.

The e-commerce retailer has not responded to emails for comment.

Seattle-based Amazon opens sortation centers, typically 200,000 to 300,000 square feet in size, to handle last-mile delivery service within the area. They employ 100-300 people.

Haha. It's typical though. It follows the pattern of what they've done in Central Florida and other metropolitan areas in recent years.

That does seem to undersell it a bit, though. If this facility comes to fruition, it looks as though by 2019 Amazon will have four facilities in Duval County. That would be tops for any county in Florida. Maybe Miami would have as many or slightly more. Tampa certainly doesn't. Neither does Orlando.

It's probably not worth debating but Lakeland is literally on the other side of County Line Road from Hillsborough. There's a couple large Amazon distribution centers and at least one large sortation center down there. Since those MSAs are squeezed up together (10 million people within a 100 mile radius of Lakeland), those centers serve Central Florida (Orlando area included).  I see no difference in what they're rolling out here, compared to what they typically do. We're a bit more rural and consolidated with our county, so all the warehouses are in Jax, as opposed to being in multiple little cities and suburbs in the middle of Tampa and Orlando.

That is why Lakeland may be the real logistics center of Florida. There are so many warehouses and distribution centers that serve both Orlando and Tampa. But great news nonetheless.

Ennis, surely you aren't contesting the impact of these facilities all being located in *one* county as opposed to some megalopolis spanning three Central Florida counties? Come on, man.

I'm really happy about this. I might actually get prime when I move back to Jacksonville later this year.

No contest. These are warehouses, not high paying corporate hubs.

Just saying their moves here aren't really different from any other metropolitan area.  In fact, they are predictable. As we continue to grow, expect more investment from Amazon. It's a great thing for Jax and its residents.

Edit: No looking back, I was slightly confused with this quote:

In my mind, when you said Tampa and Orlando, I wasn't considering you were only talking about Hillsborough and Orange, even though you mentioned Duval County in the prior sentence.  Growing up in Central Florida, the counties and cities in the metro areas kind of blend together due to urbanization, which is different from Duval's isolation.  For example, Seminole County is closer to downtown Orlando than Mandarin is to downtown Jax.  So my bad.

Going by "county" as opposed to metro:

Miami-Dade = 4
Duval = 4
Polk = 2
Hillsborough = 2
Orange = 2
