The first and second look very possible and would be a great spearhead bringing national level film-making back to the area. Moonwalk Plaza looks very good.
Movieland? I'd be shocked if they could pull that off here. Moonwalk City would be great for dowtown, but we'll see on that one. Maybe it would spur more Skyway development though.
w0w. Talk about auspicious. To land something of that magnitude here would be all sorts of phenomenal. My first question is: where the heck would he put it? Skyway references in the presentation would suggest somewhere in the vicinity of downtown? Massive!
It also makes it highly questionable. For example, the downtown site is the exact location of the Bay Street Station project that is proposed by Carlton Jones. The beaches also have a 35ft height limit, so the concepts shown would need to be revised.
Are the two concepts mutually exclusive? Could not the two co-exist theoretically?
No they can't co-exist, at least according to what each group is proposing and the amount of land they take up. The Bay Street guys recently purchased that site, so I'm in belief that if a project is to move forward on that property, it will most likely be theirs.
Lake didn't you recently post that the Bay street station developer expressed he would be selling some of that property to a hotel and entertainment development. Wish I could remember where I saw that.
Yes, they have a plan that includes two highrise hotels. However, they don't plan to own and manage them. Under their plan, a hotel operator would take over the hotels. Under Mooneyhan's plans, their development takes up the entire site.
QuoteOur Purpose:
It is the purpose of the Mooneyhan Entertainment Group to provide the entertainment industry with multi-entertainment companies and complexes. These companies and complexes relate to the Motion Picture, Television, Music Recording, and Music Publishing industries. In addition we will create public venues whose themes will encompass the entire world of entertainment. We have chosen the Jacksonville area because of the many elements that it has conducive to film and television production and tourism. In the early 1900's, Jacksonville was the birthplace of the motion picture industry and had the largest amusement theme park in the world at Jacksonville Beach. It is only fitting that both industries come back to this extremely progressive city.
Our Organization:
Mooneyhan Entertainment Group is the parent company of various entertainment companies with each in charge of their respective areas the entertainment business. The names of these companies are as follows:
Mooneyhan Motion Pictures --- Mooneyhan Films --- Mooneyhan Music --- Mooneyhan Television
Mooneyhan Film Studios --- Asillian Moon Pictures --- Mooneyhan Recording Studios
Mooneyhan Television Studios --- Mooneyhan Attractions --- Theme Park/Moon Walk Division
The companies under the parent company shall have officers in each with a complete staff of employees to make up the companies. The total amount of employees for all organizations and associated departments at the time of full operational status will be approximately 12,000 employees.
Somebody write these guys a check.
They used Google Sketchup for their renderings and fly-bys... That's what I use!
I take it they've removed the older renderings that place the downtown complex on the same site as Bay Street Station. Anyone have anything more on them?
Alrighty, here are some renderings. I see the skyway now...

Is Bay Street Station even "alive" at this point?
If Carter is still active in that area, they should team up.
I swear I'm not a pessimist but I 'm not sold on this company. Whether they're genuine big-dreamers who are lost in a fantasy or they are trying to con the city out of something somehow, I'm not sure. But I just don't trust 'em. I mean, could they not have gotten any better lighting for this huge presentation? Better quality for the brief, one-minute of actual video?
Something's just not right. I hope I'm wrong.
Phase I and II look viable.
Film-making is a very speculative business. Beyond a home-base studio (Phase I), all is probably dependant on making successful films there.

As of last week, it was alive. The developer discussed it at a recent TOD presentation. While I'm skeptical that it will break ground anytime soon, it looks to be more solid then Mooneyhan's proposal for that site.

I wonder what happened to their plans in Nashville? It looked like a go a while back.

Exactly... Seems they have tried to do variations of this project in a few other cities and it has never panned out.

I am right there with you. I am taking it with a huge grain of salt.
The studios and theme park idea would be huge. You guys that have complained about Jax's lack of tourism dollars would have nothing to worry about if that theme park idea became a reality. Jax's stance as a tourist destination would rise significantly.
However, like most of you, I'm going to wait and see what happens here. Mooneyhan movies aren't exactly blockbusters, and they would need those types of movies to fund these aggressive plans.
Well I'll post again to all the non-believers out there. As for the presentation please keep perspective, The plans that appear to be on or near the Skyway are "conceptual renderings". This phase is considered to be the most fluid of all phases, hence no animation. The importance of the renderings is not where the renderings appear to be placed downtown but that the idea itself is trying to land itself in downtown Jacksonville, there is space available in many places, but it is indisputable that no matter where it ends up it would be a good thing for the city. Moving on. As for the Theme Park it is a real and exciting idea and requires people to think on a bigger scale than they are used to in this city. I understand the skepticism on the Theme Park, I mean its big and the questions floating around about "where would it be? ,its too big" there will be thousands of questions like that asked, but rest assured we would not put out an idea like that without having the plans, locations, and forward planning in place for such a project. The important thing here is the first phase. Thats why its called a first phase, its the first step towards the rest of the project. Thats what we want to do right now and we want everyone to get behind it. We have been working at this for years now and know all about height limits, availability, who owns what, and the speed bumps we will encounter along the way. As the owner stated this "is a result of a vision that started 15 years ago". This just didn't happen overnight, it has taken us a while to get to where we are at, but ultimately everyone should know...again...thats its real and its big. TTYL

Can you tell us about the other Mooneyhan projects that seemed to have fizzled in other places? Seems I read of an attempt to do something similar in Nashville...

JohnnyNetBug, do you have any more "tidbits" or details that you'd be wiling to share?
I'm holding out judgement until something a little more concrete shows up, but the concepts and ideas sound absolutely amazing.
I'm holding out judgement as well. At this point, it seems more like a dream (although a good one), as opposed to something concrete.
Johnny, please understand that most of us are being cautiously optimistic. If your company's development comes into fruition, it will truly be an amazing project that will change Jacksonville in a tremendously positive direction. I love the ideas and the ambition behind this project. But I, like many citizens, have had our hopes crushed from the failures of even smaller projects.
We definitely want these plans to succeed, if they're legit.
Thanks CN... you convey my sentiments better than I do... :)
Yup.

Thanks for the update JohnnyNetBug. Yes, everything depends on phase 1 obviously.
I definitely would be interested in getting on board helping to bring a major film studio to Jax Beach. (I have a tv/video background.) That would be...simply a terrific boon in a terrific location.
Here's a few answers or "tidbits" for you. Yes this project idea attempted to launch in Nashville in the 90's. It did fizzle out. Here's what I can tell you. The project launch was greeted with big headlines and cheers from the community and all was wonderful however the news came out before all was set in stone, that was the first mistake but not the cause of failure. We have learned from this mistake and have limited our current projects exposure because of the lessons learned then. The cause of the failure at that time, in our opinion, was the deep rooted control of the well established music industry had in the area at the time. Everyone knows the history of Nashville and Music, and to make a long story short when we attempted to bring a competing Industry to town with the plans that were at the scale of ours, it threatened that Industry enough for them to use their influence and social stature to wrap our project in more local and political red tape than could be fended off right from the beginning. It was over before it started. We are starting again, this time being older and wiser.
As for more info on what we are currently working towards, I'm afraid that we will say no more and give no further details than what is listed online. However when we take our plans public we will more than likely be an open book.
As for the other posts, cautious optimism is good. We like that. For those holding off judgement before something concrete shows up, good, we like that too. You should hold off judgement, judge us after we pour the concrete. We just want to give a few details and let people know were in town and that we have big plans. We thought it would be a nice gesture to put some info out there so that Jacksonville knows the we feel that it is the right place and right time for this to happen here, and we feel that we will be meeting a demand for needed entertainment here and while were at it we'll help boost the economic status of this city. We are not outsiders, we live here too and we want what everyone else wants, something to hang our hat on and someone place great to go out to on a Friday night. If you have any feedback on the site don't be afraid to send it along using the contact info on the site. TTYL - JohnnyNetBug
I appreciate your explanations, Johnny, and for reasons both selfish and not, I do wish your company complete success in its endeavors here.
I look forward to the big public unveiling of your plans. Do you have any expected time frame for this?
For reasons selfish and not I wish you great success.
Excellent explanation, Johnny. I also hope that you and your company achieve complete success with these plans. They are bold, imaginative, and exciting plans for the city of Jacksonville.
We're waiting impatiently! ;D
Quote"(someplace) great to go out to on a Friday night" (sic)

Still wondering if JNB can offer a time frame for their plans...
Mood: mildly hopeful.
Man, I saw a new post in this thread and thought something was happening. :)
This is me not holding my breath.
hehe...if I keep bumping this thread it will eventually happen right? right?
BUMP.
yeah right. This is NEVER going to happen.
The funny thing is I actually was thinking about this thread this morning when I saw the moon.
Jacksonville Beach will rebuild its entire 1940s style boardwalk and roller coasters, etc. before this happens, but I like that it got bumped.. it allowed me to re-read it and have a good laugh.
Did some more digging, the Nashville project was seen as a replacement for the Grand Ole Oprey, Looks like Nashville had different ideas in fact they attacked the "California Outsiders".
In California near or in Hollywood, it is said they own the largest and most state-of-the-art studios in the Southland LA. One is located out toward Orange County, and another at Manhattan Beach, one of which is going into a phase two expansion.
Conclusion: They know how and are experienced at building sound stages that boggle the mind of the best producers. QuoteAugust 12, 2007 -- THE life story of Lucky Luciano is finally coming to the big screen. Producer Bob DeBrino - who holds the movie option to "The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano," by the late Martin Gosch and former N.Y. Times reporter Richard Hammer - is pitching studios a film about the Sicilian-born mob boss who helped the U.S. win World War II from his prison cell by ensuring labor peace on the docks. The crime kingpin, who was freed and exiled in 1946, collaborated with the authors on the condition that the book not be published until a decade after his 1962 death. New interest in Luciano was sparked by Joe Isgro, a former music promoter who in 2000 was sentenced to 50 months in jail for extortion and loan- sharking. Isgro surfaced in Hollywood claiming he had the rights to the Luciano story. "Rights to what?" Hammer sputtered. "There are no rights." Luciano has no surviving relatives. Isgro created some confusion around Tinseltown, says DeBrino, but he's pressing on. Being Italian is not a prerequisite for the lead role - DeBrino's wish list includes George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp.
Movies, Very weak in this area. But rest soundly that the Mooneyhan name is EVERYWHERE in Hollywood. There must be at least a dozen of them. They produced the movie "Where the Red Fern Grows", and also
a new flick on the life of "Lucky Luciano". Too early to tell how lucky the Luciano flick will be, while some praised the Red Fern. Overall the Red Fern was panned in the press ratings, not so much for plot or acting, but for being more of an Artsey "THE YEARLING" or "OLD YELLER" type movie. Good movie but wrong time in history.
Conclusion: While they know how to produce movies, their names also appear in a number of other flicks but more as a specialty contractor. They can do cenima, but that is aparently not their current main business.
Another of their credits was the rave reviewed DARK SHADOWS TV series.
Most studios gave up their own sound stages and back lots years ago, but they are still needed but more likely today, the space is rented on a per film basis. I think THIS is where the Mooneyhans are getting the bucks.
This link will put you in Nicholas Mooneyhans personal blog: http://www.nicholasmooneyhan.com/

OCKLAWAHA'S Conclusion? It might happen, or might not, but if the partners hold together, based on their Manhattan Beach studios, we could be in for a return to Babe Hardy and Tom Mix!If I learn more I'll post it.

Great info Ock. I'm still holding out for this proposal to rear its head again. The impact of such a dream would be astronomical.
Don't know how I ended up on this thread but any news?
At least it didn't say bump
Really! who thought this was serious, other than ock that got to post some old time movie information ;)
Spoilsport
This would be great for Jacksonville, but will it ever really happen? Anyone can put up a website and some video presentations. All can be done in a week or so. Doess't mean a thing until you get your funding, politics, and real estate in place. Hope this happens, but doubt this will ever come to fruition.
Please let this thread die in peace.
Oh it has to be bumped now and again. This project seems DOA but perhaps someone will see it and be inspired to start another project.
Haha. Yeah this thread seriously needs a "do not resuscitate" order.
we all got an e-boner when we read this thread for the first time. Hondocha is entitled to one bump like we all were.
LOL@ Buckethead.. That is the first Ive ever heard that expression. Never say never.. but I am sure not holding my breath.
That was a first post too! They scared off the newb! :o
lol
Not scared off, just sitting back, waiting for a few years for this to pop up again.
It never caught fire like the first Moonriver thread but I fear we will see this one for years,
Hmmmmm! Take a look at this - http://www.bastienarchitects.com/index.html
Interesting.
LOL. Does the city and JTA know about this?
Well EVEN I didn't know about this ;)
Yeah! About the same time that Monkeys fly out of my nether regions. This would be the death of AMTRAK downtown, as well as the JRTC plan. Any city official that buy's into this location needs a full frontal, do it yourself lobotomy.
OCKLAWAHA
ROFLMAO! Ock... Im going to need to go to the hospital next
Horrible location but I'm still a sucker for the dream.
Any kind of business coming to Jacksonville, particularly something like this would be welcome.
It's a great dream, but the reality is the name Mooneyhan just doesn't appear in the big bucks credits needed to make this fly.
OCKLAWAHA
After watching this for over the last 18 months and patiently hoping that something might actually happen, I think it is time to finally put this to rest. It is obvious that this again was another ploy to put his name in the spotlight again. Same crap, new city, 10 years later. Pull the plug, kill the messenger, fry the sucker, do something to put this story to rest. This will be my last post on this subject. I know I revived this a little while back, and to all of you, I apologize. All I did was prolong the inevitable.
Hondocha... theres nothing at all wrong with vision. I had one too... I think the plug is about to be pulled on it as well . But both concepts would have been wonderful for our City.
Shipyards?
