This is great news for 5 Points and the urban core.

Great news!  Not so great for the IMAX at World Golf Village though.

Now if St. Augustine could ever get the Regal project started St. Johns county might have a theatre worth visiting as well.

That theatre hasn't broken ground yet?  What's the hold up?

" The 5 Points Theatre will have a decidedly more vintage feel. Shad said it will be Jacksonville's oldest movie theater, having opened 81 years ago as the Riverside Theatre, a month before the Florida Theatre. Both were designed by architect Roy Benjamin.

It was turned into a nightclub in 1991. Crews have been working to restore the auditorium, which has been a meeting space in recent years, to some of its former glory.

Shad said he's modeling it after the single-screen San Marco Theatre a few miles away, which anchors an old-fashioned shopping and restaurant district similar to the Riverside neighborhood. Like the San Marco, it will serve beer and wine at its concession stand.

"This is a little urban environment, it's an entertainment destination, and this will be the center of that entertainment destination," he said."

hellssssss yes!

Awesomeness ;D

The ground has been broken but that's about it.  I can't get any info from the developer.  Multiple e-mails have gon un answered.  The site was cleared, and truckload after truckload of dirt brought in and leveled.  It then sat for a few months and then crews reappeared and started utility work but have since disappeared as well.  I assume the residential portion is being reworked and it is affecting the entire development.

Great news.  I frequent the OP AMC most of the time.  I saw Dark Knight at the IMAX screen in St. Augustine when it came out.  This makes things very convenient for me.

And I've been to the San Marco a few times as well.  I love the atmosphere they've created there.  I'm glad to see another theater of type as well.

Some movies I prefer to have the big, nice screen with cutting edge sound systems.  Other times I like the intimate feel of the single screen small theater.  Great news all around IMO.

I thought IMAX screens were much bigger than the AMC screens currently are. Are they building up past the roof?

There are two stadium style screens at OP AMC.  From what I remember there is a good bit of space above and below the current screen that would be used for the new IMAX screen.
