Title: Health Care Companies (other than hospitals) in Jacksonville?
Post by: Charleston native on August 18, 2008, 11:01:45 AM
OK, as many of you know, I have been seeking a health care administration job in your awesome city, and as an update, I have sent my application and resume to ALL of the metro area hospitals.

However, I am witnessing that it is very difficult to get into these hospitals due to their size and the competition of applicants. Many times, admin jobs in the hospitals are practically reserved for an internal employee, and the jobs are placed online just to appease labor laws.

As a result, I've been doing a Google and Ask.com search on health care companies besides hospitals (health insurance, pharmaceuticals, research, rehab, etc.) in Jax, and the results are quite ambiguous.

Can any of you provide suggestions or a list of employers in this industry located in Jax that I could apply to? I would greatly appreciate it...if I get a job offer, I may have to buy the helper a beer when I move down there!  :)

I know this subject is in the Break Room, but I do need your help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I found a Concentra position in Jax just a few minutes ago.

Anything like that...even doctor offices, if you know of any open positions. Thank you!

Charleston,

Not sure if you have been watching the T-U, but jobs in healthcare are tight in general here in Jax.  There are still some administrator spots available, but the market in general is down in healthcare (in most segments) as it is all over.  Where I work, many times the openings are posted internally only unless it is felt that there are not enough viable candidates so then they will post externally.

There have been local layoffs more than hiring....and unless a company is building a new facility in the outlying areas, there's not a ton of new stuff happening to generate additional administrative roles.

Good luck in your search....

Crap. That's not the kind of news I like to hear, but thanks for the notice. Actually, I think that many jobs in these health care organizations are kept internally...most people in Jax seem to be content with their job and location; look at low the employee turnover at places like Baptist. I disagree that hospitals aren't hiring. My current position is new, and I've only been doing it for 1.5 years. Other hospitals are creating new admin positions because the workload is increasing as the population increases. Regardless, I'd still like to know about other places besides hospitals in Jax.

I haven't been reading the T-U, mainly because most admin jobs are not posted in the newspaper anymore. Online searches at organization websites give job details, and even provide online applications...far cheaper than posting in the newspaper. Entry level positions, maybe, but not management or higher.

St. Vincents and Baptist are opening new hospitals in clay county.

Don't forget the downtown Baptist expansion.

I'm not in the healthcare field though and don't know much about the job situation.

Thanks guys. I've got ALL the hospitals covered. I need names of places like HMOs (besides BlueCross/Shield  ;) ), PPOs, pharmaceutical companies, physician firms, clinics (physical therapy, psychiatry, rehab), and even dentist firms.

CN, would you be interested in some of the larger nursing/rehab and surgery center facilities?  If you are I can at least get some phone numbers and addresses to you and a couple of names.

That would be awesome, jaxnative, thank you! I'm definitely open to those facilities, and if I can get a little inside information through the people that work there, getting a job offer will be easier. If the info is a little confidential, please PM me.

Have you tried Brooks Rehab?

Thanks Jason.  :D I'll try that one.

Bridge, I have applied to 2 or 3 positions at Brooks, and I'm still waiting on a response. What I need now are some HQs for other health care companies, like vendors, firms, and clinics.

I-10, I agree with you on some of the cities you listed...I would indeed consider living in some of them over Charlotte. But this is merely a preference of cities. I personally would abhor the thought of living in ATL or NYC, let alone Delaware. Delaware?!?!

Regardless, Charlotte has many attributes that indeed make it grand. If we end up moving there, I won't be complaining much...except that we'll be further from the coast...
Irony has a funny way of showing itself in people's lives everyday, and the above quote that I made in this (http://www.metrojacksonville.com/forum/index.php/topic,3015.0.html) thread is no exception. The best and only viable job offer has come to me from a health care company (not a hospital) in Charlotte. It is an excellent offer, and it would be foolish to reject it.

Unfortunately, as a result, my quest to make Jax our home will be placed on a significant hiatus. However, the offer is great for somebody with my experience, the company already provides tremendous opportunities, and the prospect of moving to Charlotte from Columbia is quite pleasing...to me as well as my wife! We're very excited to move to a more vibrant, growing city just over one hour away.

I am a little disappointed that I couldn't get an offer (let alone an interview) from any places in Jax, but the competition for those organizations is just amazing.

I'll still be keeping up on things here from time to time, and who knows? Many companies in Charlotte and Jax have connections and networking relationships. If this company considers a relocation in the future, I'll definitely put Jax as the #1 consideration!  ;)
