Title: Jacksonvilles Leaders outdone again, and again, and now AGAIN!
Post by: Ocklawaha on July 29, 2008, 12:38:15 PM
This just in from Milwaukie, Oregon... You guessed it, ANOTHER Light Rail Project Approved!

QuoteDylan Rivera and Peter Zuckerman
The Oregonian

OREGON - After more than a decade of debate and a failed referendum, the Metro Council has unanimously endorsed plans to extend light rail from Portland to Milwaukie.

The $1.4 billion project would build the first Willamette River bridge in downtown Portland since 1973 and extend light rail to the growing southeast section of the metro area. The line would have a stop in the South Waterfront and the bridge would carry the Portland Streetcar, buses, bicyclists and pedestrians --but no cars.

The vote clears the way for a more thorough study of the line and a request for $750 million in federal money.

The project also received unanimous though less-enthusiastic support Thursday from Clackamas County commissioners, who expressed concern about public outreach.

Regional leaders see the Milwaukie line as the fulfillment of a decades-long promise to connect the southeast metro area to downtown with mass transit. The line would put more than 22,000 households and almost 89,000 workers within walking distance of a rail station, Metro estimates.

Where would one find a list of the light/ commuter rail projects started in the last say decade?

Great sources out there:

Me! Ha Ha "Just kidding"

Here's a short list:

QuoteLight Rail is lightweight passenger rail cars operating singly (or in short, usually two-car, trains) on fixed rails in right-of-way that is not separated from other traffic for much of the way. Light rail vehicles are typically driven electrically with power being drawn from an overhead electric line via a trolley or a pantograph. Also known as "streetcar," "tramway," "trolley car."

"Heritage trolley" and "vintage trolley" systems are light rail systems that use vehicles that were built before 1960, or modern replicas of such vehicles.

This opened some eyes at my office and could open some eyes around the city.  I am surprised by the number of people who think the only cities in the USA with Light Rail are New York and Chicago.

Jacksonville's leaders outdone again, again, and now again?!? I don't believe that. And I never will. I believe that we sometime lose faith in those leaders who really desire the thing we so long desired for downtown. They wanted the same thing we want, but sometimes they drop the ball. What can we tell them? That they are so wonderfully incompetent? That they want to make this city a place where promises are made to be broken and full of false hope? If I were to tell them that, it'll be like slapping them in the face. It would be blasphemy and a great insult. Jacksonville will get the job done...we just got to believe.

Someone needs to go back and revise the list of cities under proposals.  A city undergoing a feasibility study for something unfunded that may or may not be built 10-15-20 years from now, should not be in the same category as a city like Norfolk or Phoenix, where rail construction is already underway.  Or even a city like Orlando, that's literally one vote away from breaking ground.
