QuoteDear Call Box: You wrote about Barton-Sligh's, a women's Paris fashion shop last week, and I was wondering if you could do the same for the Young Men's Shop, another downtown institution that is no more.

QuoteDear B.A.: The closing of the Young Men's Shop in February 2002 was touted as the end of an era of downtown retailing. After all, it had been there since 1919.
Through the years, it was known for its staying power through tough times, its loyal customer base, large inventory of men's hats, full-service tailor shop, knowledge of its customers' needs and willingness to offer credit.
"We have fourth-generation customers who trade here," co-owner Betty Moss told the Times-Union in 1999.
Louis Moscovitz, a Romanian immigrant, started the shop at 135 W. Bay St. as "Louis Moscovitz Popular Price Men's Shop," according to the 1999 story. It advertised Palm Beach brand suits on sale for $10.95 with values to $18. In 1999, it was still selling those suits, but the price tag by then was $285 to $350.
By 1925, it was called the Young Men's Shop.
