Another craft brewery getting ready to open at the beaches!

Co-owner Spencer Horn said he's shooting for a April opening. Much of the equipment is installed, he's got his city zoning and expects his state and federal licenses by the end of February. But he doesn't want to open until he's serving his own beer, he said.
He's opening it with his wife, Linda, and twin brother, Chuck Horn, owner of Horn Builders. Their plan is for 20 taps in the taproom and 20 in the event space, which will be out in the brewery. Altogether, they've got almost 7,000 square feet.

Wow!! So how many does that make for the greater Jax area?! Gotta be close to a dozen either open or in the planning stages.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how does Jax stack up against other cities in this respect? As someone who isn't really that au fait with this subject, 17 or 18 craft breweries seems a lot for a city of our size (like, in a good way).

I think we fall about in the middle. We fall way behind cultural hubs like Denver, Miami, Austin, Seattle, and Asheville as well as other cities like Tampa and San Diego. We are well ahead of boring cities like Orlando, Birmingham, etc..

It depends on what you compare it to, but it's a good number. In Florida, we're only behind Tampa and St. Pete in terms of the number and density of breweries (and arguably quality). We have more than the Orlando metro area, which is half again our size, and are just behind all of South Florida combined. But compared to places with more established brewing, it's a lot smaller. In Michigan, Grand Rapids alone has over 50 breweries and almost every town in the state has at least one brewery or brewpub. North Carolina is similar; as the good Captain points out, Asheville has more breweries than we do and they're a third of our size. Some big cultural hubs like Denver and San Francisco have great breweries.
On the other hand, we're much better off than a lot of places, including some that you'd think would have better beer scenes. Due to weird state laws, places like Nashville, Savannah, and even Atlanta and Boston have pretty restricted brewing scenes. In fact, based on my experience I'd rate our brewing scene favorably in comparison to Miami, Boston and Atlanta which are several times our size and are cultural hubs. And those places get blown out of the water by places with much less cultural cachet like Tampa Bay, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and little old Asheville. Plus our scene is continuing to grow and mature.

Most of the brew pubs aren't anything to write home about either (3 of them are owned by the same corporation that runs another one at Disney World). But they all do brew their own beer.

I believe River City, A1A Aleworks, and Ragtime are now run by the Gordon Biersch chain of brewpub/restaurants. Although each of those three have different names for their beers, most are pretty much the same recipe used for their other Gordon Biersch breweries, but still. And on top of the list of potential breweries, Old Coast Ales is starting to set up on Anastasia Island. It's great the area's beer scene is looking promising. And don't forget the local distilleries.
This is fantastic! In my anecdotal experience, the brewery scene here is one of the large factors attracting millennials to Jax.

Yeah I wasn't really thinking about the brewpubs in my question. Microbrews that distribute is really a very different animal. In any case, yeah Jax is looking good!

Close - A1A, Ragtime, and Seven Bridges are the 3 owned by CraftWorks (owners of Gordon Biersch). They do all have essentially the same recipes. RCBC is independent I believe.
^^^ Thanks for the correction. I think RCBC used to be part of that group. This also had me thinking about what effect state and local laws can affect a region's brewing scene. For example New York City and state have numerous craft breweries while across the river here in Jersey we have a few iconic ones and some new players but nothing like NY offers.
ere is also another brewpub called Southern Swells coming to Jax Beach. Signage is up at the Beach Blvd. location in the shopping center just east of Shetter Ave. but I'm not sure when they are opening.

Yeah, local laws can affect things positively or negatively more than nearly anything else. In Florida, you couldn't sell 22oz bombers before 2001, and there were potentially other restrictions as well. As it severely limited how much revenue breweries could make, Florida had very few breweries before that. It wasn't until 2015 that they could sell half-gallon growlers (the most common size). Liberalizing the laws has caused the industry to mushroom since that time, though it's really only caught fire in Jax and Tampa Bay, though Miami is starting to come along.
New Jersey had notoriously awful laws for breweries until just a few years ago. I read that there are still only about 80 breweries in New Jersey, compared to nearly 300 in Michigan which has a similar population. In Georgia, breweries can't have tap rooms as they can in most if not all other states. That's a huge revenue generator for breweries, so the scene is restricted. In Tennessee until this year, there was a weird law where places couldn't serve or sell beer over 5% alcohol unless they had a liquor licence. So most of the breweries focused on less strong beer. In Massachusetts, there are lots of arcane bureaucratic laws that make it tough to open breweries and make any money at it. As such, places like Boston, Atlanta, and Nashville have pretty tepid brewing scenes even though the markets would probably lap it up.
The lesson is, if states want craft breweries, they need to stop listening to the macro brewery lobbyists and pass less restrictive legislation. It worked here in FL.
