Title: Ivy Bar on Bay Street
Post by: comncense on July 19, 2008, 08:03:08 PM
Any word on Ivy Bar opening? I thought I read somewhere on here that they were planning on opening in late July.

I drove by there this weekend and noticed that they had something like green tissue paper covering the windows. I'm guessing it's still a go. I'm interested to see how it's going to be.

Stephen Dare probably knows some info. I am excited about this opening and the supper club that he mentioned too.

I got an email from them and it says that they are having their Grand Opening on August 22nd. I hope the guys are successful in their venture, especially consider I've recently developed a distaste for Mark's. They also stated that they'd have a soft opening Thursday the 21st, as they'd be open for the "Make a Scene Downtown" bar crawl.

I went and checked it out Saturday night. I was surprised to see so many came out. For it being a opening weekend, I give it a thumbs up. If there was a night time stop on the empty block between Mark's and Ivy, I'd be temporarily satisfied.

I was hoping a sign was coming - looks great.

Dare I say it, but there's actual neon lights on Bay St.

Toneloc,
You MUST have a sign of at least this caliber for your new place. And I will take some pics of the sign at night as I plan on being at the Ivey either Friday or Sat night.

toneloc007, also make sure your place includes some type of activity on the front sidewalk.  This could be as simple as an outdoor seating area, but nothing attracts more people to a spot, then seeing other people enjoying themselves.

Yep, no one on Bay st yet has a bar that opens out onto the sidewalk.

The Ivy Bar has a coupla tables, and chairs to sit outside. I love the Ivy "Ultra" Bar. Sunday is 'The Night" for that place; Great live music with a full band; Lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, congas, and keyboard. I spoke to one of the partial owners there, and he was really cool; He's former Army, and I'm too, so the conversation was smooth as ice. Great place; I highly recommend! BTW, of Sunday if I'm not mistaken, there's a two-for-one drink special!! ;D :) 8)

Yeah, thats one of the things thats on our priority list. We do realize you need a sign to catch people attention...we've thrown around the idea of maybe a laser style sign that is projected on a couple of the sides of the buildings plus neon style lighting on the front...we're still toying with the idea.

Has anyone else heard that The Ivy is doing away with cover charges and providing free valet? That would be so sick.

I was there on Saturday for Florida/Georgia and obviously it was packed. I love that place because I never have to wait to long for a drink and they have great drink specials. They had a band called Splittone and they rocked the place out. I think they are playing again tonight. I love the free cover and free valet, can't beat it!!

I went a few weeks ago on a Saturday night hoping it would live up to the "ultra" bar status. Too bad it didn't.

It did have some good points. It was free, reasonable drink prices, nice couches and tables and some attrative people.

The worst part about it was the DJ. DJ EL, I remember his name because he yelled it after every song. He should go by DJ YELL because thats what he did all night. He did some great catch phrases though, like "MAKE SOME NOISE", "THIS NEXT SONG IS HOT!" or "SOMEBODY SCREAM!" But the worst part was he played a song twice, seriously twice, and it wasn't a remix. Do you get your DJ license taken away for that?

Thanks!!!  We had a good time. Found it to be just another open space with a bar and a dance floor. I say it was no different than Mark's or Dive Bar. We left at 12:30am to hit up the Gold Club.  ;D

Yeah... it was on the news... On a brighter note my wife and I visited Bold city for one of their awesome brews, then moved on to O'Brothers which was packed inside and out.  Managed to get a seat inside at the bar...(pure luck).  Sampled the Welsh Rarebit (plenty for two people) and it was pretty good.  Took a stroll through five points... Fuel had a good crowd though we did not venture inside.  Decided to appease an appetite for pizza at Al's... Great night to be out! :)

I wanted to post a experience I had at The Ivy this weekend. Let me go back for a minute and say the first time I went there I was highly disappointed and posted a story about it on here. If youa re interested, please go back a  page or two and read my previous post.
Ok, back to this weekend. Upon hearing about my displeasure the first time, one of the owners, Lee, contacted me personallya dn invited me and some friends to come back and havea  night of VIP. I thought this was a wonderful gesture and decided to give it a second chance. Int he VIp area, we had a server who was constantly checking up on us. Lee also came over several times to make sure everything was going good. Our seat was right next to DJ L, who i think someone else posted about not liking. I was able to watch him work a little bit, and he did a lot of nice genre changes and yes he does like the mic, but he never stayed on too long. I think he did a great job.
I like alot of what the Ivy does. They offer valet and coat checking and bottle service VIP which I do not believe anyone else offers on "The Strip". I think they have set the bar for any future establishments in the area. The crowd seems to be lively and diverse. It, of course increased as the night wore on. Adequate security made me feel safe. On a  downside though, I did notice the tvs above the bar, when something bright was on, really lit the room up and brought down the dance floor atmosphere. I am not sure what can be done about that though. If anyone from the Ivey reads this, well done guys and it makes me want to do VIP again. I love feeling like a king, even if only for a night.

(ha). jeez man.

As someone who has been to the Ivy, Marks, & Dive many times............your review is just silly. "Security so I feel safe"?

Gimme a break. At no time have i ever NOT felt safe at any one of those club/bars. There are police downtown all night, you pass at least 2 cars coming and going without fail. Often a car is parked on Bay Street in that area.

You treat a club/bar like it's a fine dining critical review, which is laughable. There is a very simple equation: good location + good ambiance + acceptable athetics + hot girls = successfull. If you have the money, this isn't hard to create. And if you spend time using ciritcal thinking skills disecting the various attributes of club/bars who noone cares about (very few people use VIP parking, for example) then have your priorities and expectations all wrong . . . . . .

Oh yeah, The Ivy was just ok on Friday night. The cold scared a lot of people away I think.

I'm still pretty "ehhh" on Ivy. While it does sound like you had a good experience there Dapperdan, it shouldn't take having to be in VIP to enjoy a club/bar/lounge. Valet and coat checks are good things. Bottle service VIP...Mark's offers that too. I guess Ivy just hasn't developed a regular crowd yet. I've gone by there a few times on Friday's and Saturday's and the place is pretty empty. And no matter how good the service is, nobody wants to go to an empty club and hang out. But this isn't a knock on Ivy. I personally admire the fact that they have a group of young owners and were able to go forward with an idea that alot of people just talk for years about and never do. I hope they find their niche and are able to be successful. There's been a few things that were nice that have come and gone downtown. I still kinda miss the Eclate (the jazz club that was there before Dive Bar).

fsu813,
I mentioned security because a lot of people want to feel safe where they go. I don't know if you have noticed or not, but there have been a lot of club shootings in the area. Thanks for reviewing my "review". A lot of people go out for more reasons than you mention.
The night I was there, the place was very full. You may see it empty at like 10PM, but by 11 or so, it is rolling. I enjoyed the night, and stand by my review.

Yeah it was funny because Mark's started doing pat-downs at the door this weekend. I know there's been alot of gun violence at some of the clubs lately, but alot of that I would think has to do with the clientele being in the 18 and up category. Though, I don't mind them taking the extra steps just to be cautious.
