But its not going over well with T-U staff and some Morris Publishing employees.
Said one T-U reporter, "this sets back our reputation decades"
When T-U employees attempted to intercept the endorsement, Morris reminded them that they "work local campaigns, the HQ deals with national ones" and its not their place to interfere in corporate endorsements.
Below is the email I sent earlier today. You can also email the man who forced our local paper to endorse Trump, and you might even decide to cancel your subscription like I did. This is a sad day for our city.
will.morris@morris.com
Mr. Morris,
You might think you know our city, but you don't. Jacksonville is conservative, but not in the way you are. You think assaulting women is conservative? You think berating the most vulnerable in our society is conservative? You think greed, hatred, and narcissism are values that conservatives support? You think cheating on your wife is conservative? You think shady business deals and lack of transparency are conservative? You think "locker room talk" and cursing is conservative? Trump is not a conservative and for you to force the Florida TU to endorse him is an absolute disgrace! Shame on you!
I just canceled my subscription.
Very Well Said
When newspapers that haven't endorsed a Democrat for President in many decades, and in some cases, not since they were founded in the 1800's, yet refuse to endorse Trump, this one truly stands out.... and not in a good way.
The Trump run is an interesting scenario.
Seemingly absurd developments, such as the Trump phenomenon, occasionally defy understanding simply because their origins are hidden in mechanisms working over decades ... embedded ... covertly massaged by something akin to a religion, the destructive nature of which is perhaps perceived by a few who warn, but are ignored.
This ultimately hostile religion ... a consequence of enduring the negative aspects of an unfettered capitalist system, is wrapped around the worship of money, riches, and wealth, to be achieved at the cost of decency and civility ... at the cost of not ensuring enough jobs ... at the cost of a ruined economy ... at the cost of an increasingly obscene economic inequality.
This religion, promoted by a bought and clueless media, corrupted by evangelicals, corporate america, the justice system, the law profession, wall street, and politicians ... has evolved to a condition where it exerts a power exceeding that of any other religion. As with any religion, it captures the mind of the disciple ... shapes it to dispatch its doctrines; and this, even if the religion ultimately projects insane and delusional behavior, ultimately destructive to the individual and to the nation.
The pressure of the insane quest for money and wealth ... often called greed ... as promoted by the above mentioned religion, encourages conditions aptly described by Chris Hedges ...
"We now live in a nation where doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy."
I would like to add that along with lawyers (some) destroying justice there are prosecutors (some) who destroy justice, judges (some), probation officers (some) too, who destroy justice ... such is the drug effect of power, and the consequences of having mental mediocrities in any justice system. There are, of course, in any system of justice, individuals of superb intellect and ethics. We need more of these, and less of the mediocrities ... who tend to destroy the gains made by the former.
The Trump phenomenon seems to be a consequence to the realization by an increasingly larger segment of our population that something is very wrong with significant aspects of our society ... and that the cause is related to the long entrenched political machine, which includes the likes of Ms. Clinton. In other words, to many, Clinton is too close to the political establishment that caused the current assortment of economic, political, and societal dysfunctions ... not to mention the wasteful and destructive U. S. military aggressions throughout the world.
I don't consider myself to be of either major party, as to do so encourages one to ascribe to the occasional absurd policies held by both. And I am not, in the usual sense, a "patriot", as to be so might suggest that I approve of the existing absurdities related to our nation. One might suggest that I am a patriot of the world, as I am concerned about the citizens of the world. I consider nationalism and imperialism, and certainly xenophobic thinking, to be attitudes cultivated from a society too long swayed by a general ignorance, a sick media, and a political machine corrupted by the religion of wealth and riches. To hell with both the bought Clinton and the incompetent Trump. Neither is suitable for a presidency. Our sick society, obsessed with the religion of wealth, riches, and greed, cultivates and encourages corrupt and incompetent power mongers to the presidency. When will a true leader emerge to the front?
Gotta get to work.
This was a very odd decision. Reportedly, the staff at the TU are very unhappy with this directive coming from William Morris. It certainly isn't helping the (declining) reputation of this paper.
What a joke. They join a Sheldon Adelson-owned paper and the KKK paper as the only ones to endorse Trump.
The company you keep...
