Title: New Details Come To Light in Riverside Eye Cutting.
Post by: stephendare on July 19, 2008, 12:59:19 AM
from an email sent to metrojacksonville from Jason at Jacksonvilleconfidential.com

Anthony Blakely, the victim, and an alleged drug dealer were at Starlite initially. Blakely said something to the suspect's girlfriend to the effect of, ( well it was pretty horrible, so weve decided not to run the paraphrase.  suffice it to say that he made a very rude comment to the guy's girlfriend)

(Although Blakely has a gf too). Well the GF told D-----(the suspect). They all relocated to Kickbacks and mingled. Apparently D------ was in the bathroom for like 7 minutes (thats what I was told, strange that it was an exact amount of mins.) on his cell phone talking to peep(s). Anyway, they left. As you know, shortly thereafter Blakely was found at HERSCHEL and GOODWIN (NEW INFO) in the middle of the street 2 HOUSES DOWN FROM D------S HOUSE.

A close friend says that Blakely has told authorities that it was D----- since the beginning but they were not listing him as a "suspect" or "person of interest" because they want to build a solid case to put him away forever. Apparently this will be his third strike.

As you said, Blakely was at Starlite Wednesday night and peeps were all cryin and stuff but he was "all smiles" and "remarkably very comfortable" being there. He has been "quoted" (since its now third hand) as saying that he just wants to learn how to DJ without sight.

After the interview with Blakely's friend tomorrow, Tony will be moving in with a family member who will be taking care of him. He is very optimistic.

D----- AND his girlfriend are nowhere to be found and police say (again, according to sources) that he is on the run.

Oh some other details, His eyes werent GOUGED he was cut with a knife underneath like where the "circles under your eyes" are. His ear was also cut but not cut off.

This follows our report last week, which was also carried on channel 30 in this online version.  http://www.fox30online.com/content/topstories/story.aspx?content_id=0BF81C10-9459-4123-9D2C-6E80CA11B8FD&gsa=true

It was a passerby who saw Anthony Blakely's lifeless body in the middle of Herschel Street in Riverside. When help arrived, Blakely's eyes were protruding from his face, his ear was severly lacerated.

The only thing the victim could tell police was that "they beat me." Investigators are still trying to figure out who they are.

Those in Riverside were shocked by the crime. Many who live here love it because it is so quiet and peaceful. Richard Warholic had no idea the loud nosies that had woken him up early July 5th came from Blakely's brutal beating. Warholic says it sounded like serveral people were invovled in the crime.

Blakely is said to be in fair condition. If you know anything about the crime you are asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department.

maybe we can change the explicit supposed quote to something more print-appropriate like "he made a very rude comment to the guy's girlfriend".

I didn't realize 8 year olds came to this site.
I think we're all adults here.  I heard worse than this in the locker room when I was in 5th grade.

we just strive to keep it workplace appropriate.  if your boss walks up and finds you reading this and doesn't care, he/she is the exception to the rule.  also, if we are going to do something in a "reporting manner", a slight bit more professionalism is called for.  you don't read this kind of "locker room talk" in the T-U or NYTimes, etc...

1)  This sort of language is just one reason why no one takes Stephen Dare seriously;
2)  His obsessive focus on crime in Riverside, when far worse things happen on a daily basis elsewhere in the City, indicates that he has some strange animus towards our fine and safe neighborhood.
3)  If you dont hang out in bars and make lewd comments towards some other guy's girlfriend (or associate with the drug crowd), chances are you wont get in a fight later in Riverside or anywhere else.

Uh, he's quoted in very good an article in Folio this week. Not to mention him getting JTA to not only pay attention to his ideas but also to prompt a meeting with them as well.

The victim, Anthony apparently moved,(Garbage with his name left out front) and left town before the suspect was caught. Last word was the "Deacon" was at large and not caught yet.Why was this once again kept quiet...So JSO can build a case??? Catch the bastard first and don't let him get to Mexico!!  Isn't it funny how it's so hard to prosecute a repeat fellon in Jax, but they can Package a multiple DUI case with jail time in moments.......And BTW.Riverside gator should just go away if he can't keep from diverting every thread to a SD personal attack. >:(

Thanks guys for all the comments on this story, after interviewing Anthonys best friend I thought that the forums would be the best place for the story so we could try to piece together some more info.

on jacksonville.com today:

http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/081408/met_318311852.shtml

If he just stands still, the man's oversized sunglasses can hide what happened.

They give him the look of the jovial disc jockey he was when Fourth of July partying began at Starlite Cafe, a popular Five Points nightspot where he worked part time.

It's when he moves, grabbing onto a friend's shoulders and slowly shuffling his feet, that the purpose of the shades becomes clear.

They cover the empty eye sockets of a man whose eyes were cut out in a near-death beating early July 5.

The Times-Union is not naming the victim and family because the attacker has not been arrested.

Wednesday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released the name of the suspect. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Foster Rayfield Leon, 30, of Jacksonville. He's described as 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds. His last known address was not provided.

Leon faces aggravated battery charges. He is accused of attacking the DJ after an altercation that started at the Starlite.

Friends say the DJ apparently said something that angered a woman who was with Leon.

Police found the beaten man at Copeland and Herschel streets, less than a mile from Starlite.

According to the police report, his eyes were "protruding" from his head, and one ear was badly cut. All he was able to say at the time was: "They beat me."

Neighbors privy to the medical details said the DJ's eyes were sliced out with surgical equipment - ensuring he could never see again.

His father confirmed on Wednesday that his son's eyes were cut out. He also said it's clear that the attacker or attackers knew what they were doing.

Chief of Investigations Rick Graham said it would be "inappropriate" to comment on the ongoing investigation.

Leon had been released from the Duval County jail a week before the attack after serving a six-month sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon.

The Sheriff's Office couldn't detail his criminal history. Florida Department of Law Enforcement records don't show any other convictions in the state.

The DJ, fearing for his life, left Jacksonville after a lengthy stay in a hospital.

"He's healing, and the process is slow," the 39-year-old's father said. "He's in and out of depression, but that's expected. He wants to be an independent person."

His son's maiming, he said, is a double dose of heartache for the family. The man's younger sister died in June, a month before the beating.

"We were empty-nesters," the father said. "We were planning to retire to Florida. Our lives changed in an instant."

Saturday, Starlite will have a fundraiser to help the victim pay his medical bills. There will be live bands, and patrons will be asked to donate what they can.

The help is crucial because the DJ didn't have health insurance, his father said.

The DJ invited the Times-Union to his house before he left town in July, but he later decided he didn't think it was safe to comment until police catch whoever brutalized him.

Anyone with information can contact the Sheriff's Office at (904) 630-0500 or First Coast Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-8477 (845-TIPS) to remain anonymous and be eligible for rewards.

Dude, someone having their eyes cut out with surgical equipment is tragic, gruesome and out of the ordinary. I wouldn't chalk someones interest in the story up to his or her "obsessive focus" on crime in a particular neighborhood.
This whole situation is sick and shocking.

QuoteJacksonville man accused of cutting out DJ’s eyes arrested

New Orleans authorities have arrested the Jacksonville man wanted in one of the most horrifying acts of violence the First Coast has seen.

LeonFoster Rayfield Leon, 30, had an arrest warrant out for the early morning July 5 attack on 39-year-old Anthony Blakely, whose eyes were cut out after he DJ’d at a Five Points nightclub.

BULL SHIT!

Sorry y'all, but this is a story of horror and crime, I don't want to read the white-washed version of this perp dude and his female companion. I have yet to see a photo of the suspect, and if I step off a downtown elevator and hear the distinctive list of foul language, then I might think better of pissing him off. Hell's bell's I might even spot the guy based on his potty mouth and have him flushed down the river.

Anyone able to pull such a stunt isn't super cool or super brave, he or she isn't going to get any criminal respect in jail or prison either. Even doing such a thing during a time of war, for whatever purpose, will get you a date with a firiing squad. In fact our friendly attorney Riverside Gator should know, the only time this sort of action has EVER been condonned was during the Federal occupation of the Southern States. One federal officer recieved letters of thanks and gratitude from the White House, for his treatment of "deadly" spy's and the Confederate Underground. A series of cases of cutting out the tounge, eyes, and cutting off the nose and ears of 15-17 year old Southern boys for "failure to surrender information", yeah, real fine work.

Apparently giving too much information in certain clubs around town can get one the same treatment, then reporting on the crime earns you a symbolic removal of you voice, loss of creditability etc... As the old TV show once said, just give me the facts, just the facts... whatever... Pues Si?

No one is faster to point out something good going on in Riverside than Stephen.  I would say the core neighborhoods have an ally in Mr. Dare.

I agree that personal insults are uncalled for.  I have been actively deleting them in the National Politics section which has drawn some complaints.
http://www.metrojacksonville.com/forum/index.php/topic,3006.0.html

If you make me moderator or the News and general Politics sections, the insults there will also be deleted.  Those sections really need an active moderator.
