Title: Five Points: Qdoba out, Five Guys coming in
Post by: thelakelander on July 16, 2008, 11:16:04 PM
Quote• Bad news for Riverside lunch patrons who frequented the Qdoba Mexican Grill on Margaret Street. It closed Saturday and movers were packing up and moving out Tuesday.

• Speaking of Riverside, according to neighbors of Qdoba, there will be a Five Guys moving in. The Washington, D.C.-based burgers and fries joint has an existing location on the Northside and two in the Southside area.

OH THANK GOD!!! I hate Qdoba. Moes is alot better and cheaper. Five Guys has the greatest burger I've EVER had. Oh, I'm so happy!!!

Well that sucks. Sorry, Qdoba has a much better quality product...case in point, their 3-cheese queso is simply outstanding. Moe's queso is pretty standard.

Is Qdoba having trouble nationally? That may have been the reason for this closing.

Five Guys is pretty good...but you can eat a hamburger anywhere. Qdoba was unique.

QuoteQdoba was unique

I don't know if I'd call it unique.  Qdoba and Moes have the same food and there is like 10 Moe's in Jax.

I mean unique in their presentation and food offerings. I just prefer Qdoba's casual southwestern atmosphere as opposed to Moe's eclectic theming. Better beans, better queso, better ingredients in their food. Are there any other Qdobas in town?

I think there is one at the SJTC.

Personally, I can't wait for Chipotle to open...  frequented the Atlanta one when there on business and miss it terribly.  Hopefully they'll open in more locations than at the Town Center....

Tijuana Flats, on the other hand is in a league all on their own.  They need to open up in OP!!!

I prefer Q'Doba over Moes any day... but I will be dumping them both once Chipotle opens. They are my favorite burrito place in the world!

I do like Tijuana Flats but I think my favorite is Sierra Grille.

Sierra Grille....Nice.  There is this same burrito place argument on another thread.  I side with the Chipotle crowd.  I was dead sure they would open one in 1661 Riverside, but I was banking on the spot where Einstein's went in.   When they announced that Chipotle was entering the Jacksonville market, they talked about the San Marco Moe's a lot. Maybe a location will be near there.

PS- Speaking of San Marco, I heard yesterday that they will be putting in a First Place Sports next door to the Loop.  I don't know the timeline.

I haven't had the privilege of eating at a Chipotle's yet. South Carolina seems to be the last state to get anything. I take an opinion into consideration when someone who loves Qdoba says that Chipotle's is even better. Hmmm...I'm getting hungry.  :)

I can't wait for Chipotle. I have made a point to stop at the one off of 95 in Daytona anytime I am headed down that way. I am sure they will expand in our market. I also believe that could force Qdoba out of the Jax market. They closed their location on Beach/San Pablo last year and are down to 2 locations. I imagine the SJTC spot will struggle when Chipotle opens.

I drove by the Qdoba's in OP last night and the sign is no longer there. I believe that leaves one at the SJTC if it's still there.

With so many good independent mexican and southwestern restaurants, it's kind of a shame that people mourn the loss of a place like Qdoba. The food was downright bland. I'd take La Nop or Burrito Gallery over Qdoba and its ilk any day.

Seriously, there are only a couple of decent Mexican-type restaurants here.  Burrito Gallery, of course....and for those of you who don't mind being the only Gringos in the place....or whatever besides Latino....there is Pepe's Hacienda at St. Augustine and Dupont in Lakewood.  They make fresh tortillas for sale and it is a pretty decent little Mexican market.  Their guacamole is the only stuff I will eat in town besides what I make myself.  If you cook Southwestern, they have tomatillos, peppers (many dried, a few types fresh), avocados for WAY cheaper than any grocery store.  Also have Mexican pastries - not all of that sweet stuff like we are used to, but authentic bread-like.

The rest of the Mexican places in Jax are not good, in my opinion....having lived in the Phoenix area for 18 years I have had a lot of Mexican food and worked with many who made their own...especially at the holidays.  YUM, the tamales and homemade tortillas.....

We are going to La Nopalera tonight for our staff meeting, as we often do. Nothing like a 32oz. Dos Equis and a Fajitas Taco Salad for about 10 bucks! YUM!!!!!

I didn't see it mentioned here (although I might have missed it), but for all you Chipotle lovers out there...

I about flipped when I saw it, but the first Chipotle I saw in JAX (how desperately we've needed one) looks like it's going up on San Jose, just south of 295 (past the Wal-Mart in the same plaza area of the Chili's down there). Saw the sign today, little construction going into it, should be opened shortly...

...and there goes my calorie intake.

I Do not understand the Chain restaurant worship in this town. This is why Developers and speculators are running away with this towns money.how do you know your burritto will be the same one you had in Atlanta/Charleston/Savanna.Shame on this Constant craving for food that tastes like masking tape and gets unloaded from a Big Cisco truck.Does anyone have any taste buds left? Jax confidential staff and Members know this trend.....Plain and simple, No love in the preparation..no taste.

Five Guys is not exactly McDonalds.  It is a different type of burger restaurant (albeit a chain).  All chains are not created equally.

I think it comes down to a sad sort of validation.  Until recently (and you can define recently however you like) there were no major (high end national) chains in town.  Then some started sprinkling themselves in town (Starbucks being a key example, but that was more the shotgun approach) and now, BAM.  Everyone from Abercrombie and Fitch to Cheesecake Factory and back to Banana Republic (remember back when it was uneven-sand-dune-Safari-kitsch-flooring at the Landing?) are sucking up the $'s.  It's as though a big "Yeah, Jax is now on the map, I don't have to go to Atlanta for this whatever anymore" exhaltion has gone off yet even the "scenesters" are at the St Johns Town Center only to go back to their 'hoods to wonder online why everything is is drying up.  Why isn't this in [insert urb-burb area here] anymore?  Well, it's because all y'all are going out to the ephemeral trendy of the moment spots at some overpriced mall that doesn't give a flip about anything locally and will be out of town the second things take a downturn (revisit the shotgun approach people previously mentioned...)  Anyways, I don't even know why I am hitting [POST] as I don't think this even makes sense to me, but it's been one of those days!  Peace.

I understand 5 bros will be higher quality. I'll try it. also try out a Chipotle if one opens up and is reasonably priced...My 5-Points might be Gentrified..but I'm not. ;D FPJ, I noticed this trend also....the "Fair weather Restaurant patron" syndrom. This is why we see the same building open up with a new establishment every 8 month's or so.Why oh Lord, can't we have a REAL walk up taco stand near 5-points or King street that stays open till 3 or so...Like those northern rust belt towns.   Some careless souls poison themselves with late night "w Awful-House" food.Uggh..NOT a diner.

That is a tough call... 5 guys quality IMO is a little - better especially the fries.
Cheeburger-Cheeburger does have more choices, awesome milk shakes and a plethora of dipping sauces.

So far I've been to 5 Guys three times lol

oh well the fries were good along with the peanuts, but a real veggie burger would have been nice.

They weren't kidding about it being greasy, it soaked through the brown bag and got all over my coffee table. This place needs to be open till 3 am, i think it'd put krystals outta business.

Although I was expecting something along the lines of Cruisers grille at the beach, or even a Harpoon Louie burger, so I was a bit caught off guard by the fast-food like atmosphere plus the burger (cheese with mustard ketchup) didn't live up to the hype. But they do serve a-1 sauce so maybe i'll give that a shot next time. Does anyone have a personal favorite they order from there?

I recently heard about the "veggie" burger and was rather amused. I too wouldve been terribly disappointed had I ordered one and not known that it was just a burger without the meat.

The bacon cheeseburger with BarBQ sauce is incredibly good.  This is what I get with lettuce, tomatoes and onions.  I highly recommend it.   :)

No they are all over town now.  This is the fourth location (SJTC, Southside Blvd & RCM being the others) that I am aware of.

EDIT: According to their website, they have six locations.  The other two are on Hodges Blvd and at Oakleaf Town Center.

I'm sad Qdoba is no longer in Five Points. A burger joint seems kinda boring (and thanks for the heads up on their veggie burger) man I would have been pissed.

Anyways,  it seems a lot of people around here love their chain restaurants. Whenever I have a friend visiting I usually take them to Burrito Gallery, Moon River or Moss Fire so they can have something a bit different and better then some run of the mill chain restaurant.
