Title: Jax Microbrew Recommendations
Post by: spuwho on September 17, 2016, 08:02:46 PM
Have a friend in Indiana who isn't able to travel a lot, but loves beer. (Preferably Bavarian beer) When he did travel he would always go to the Oktoberfest in Bavaria.

So he is asking if it would be possible to ship him some of Jax's finest beer.

Must be in a legal container so it can be shipped,

Any suggestions?

I've been wanting to do this for a few of my friends. Unfortunately, other than some seasonal releases from our local breweries, most everything is canned and cannot be shipped through the mail.

Officially, you can't really ship beer. USPS says they won't do it, and UPS and Fed Ex both have policies against it. However, it can be done through USPS if you pack it well and ensure it won't leak if it ruptures (and the chances are slim to none that you'd get in trouble trying it. I usually put the bottles in individual Ziplocks to contain any leaks, and wrap them all well. Also make sure that the outside of your box doesn't say what it is.

Intuition, Bold City, Green Room, and Veterans United all have canned versions of their flagship beers at many grocery and liquor stores. Some also do bottles. At this point, Intuition and Bold City can be found about anywhere. As Spitfire says, others also do seasonal releases in bomber bottles, which sometimes make it to the tap rooms and specialty stores. Aardwolf usually has some in tap room, but I don't recall what if anything they have currently. Unfortunately, the best stuff that both Aardwolf and Intuition bottles usually sells out day of.

I'd recommend calling the taprooms first to see if they can hook you up. Then, try calling Beer:30, Broudy's, and Grassroots Natural Market to if they have anything. Also, they're not from Jacksonville, but Cigar City and St. Somewhere from Tampa Bay will often have cans, bottles and bombers in local stores, which are usually pretty good.

Officially cant ship "beer" or alcoholic beverages in general?

I have ordered Micro brewed root beers in bottles before with  no issues. Amazon sells Coke in the can or bottle.

Distribitors have strict agreements to keep alcohol sales strictly retail and have lobbied states to ban interstate sales via the internet.

But that doesnt stop a private party from shipping their own purchase for personal use.  That's why the Napa Valley wineries offer post- purchase shipping options.

I see the same thing here. Purchasing a local microbrew in can or bottle, package and ship it to the guy to satisfy his taste.

And its not like Smokey and the Bandit, Im not exporting a truck full of Coors past the Mississippi or anything.  Just a few cans/bottles.

To me its exporting tourism. Maybe he will come to the Jax Beer Fest instead.

The liquid state and alcohol are the real problems, not beer specifically. Bottling companies are able to do it, but it's against UPS, Fed Ex, and USPS regulations for unlicensed individuals. However, the regulations are silly and not widely enforced, so people do it every day with no problems. In fact, I'd personally encourage you to do it, just take precautions so the containers don't open and/or your package gets rejected. My wife and I have done this with my brother in law in Columbus, and we only bad problems twice (but in one instance, they kept all our beer).

Good links, thanks.

I will label the shipment "dish soap" since like beer they create lots of suds.   :)

Interesting the level of scrutiny on shipping booze, but yet high school kids can have UPS deliver steroids to their school address.
