How did everyone come up with their usernames? Mine is fairly obvious...I lived on a Houseboat, and my first name is Mike. Although now I live on a sailboat, I passed that "newbie" stage and don't want to start over. ;D
So other than the obvious (looking at you Mr. Dare), what made you pick the username you have?
I am especially curious of the following:
MMR
FineHoe
Noone
NRW
I was living in Lakeland when I signed up to Skyscrapercity.com and Skyscraperpage.com in 2003 as the Lakelander. When I was asked to start and grow a Florida forum (eventually grew into this site) at Urbanplanet.org a few months later, I added "the" to the lakelander. When I moved to Jax, I kept the name since it was already known by people participating on the other discussion boards.
Tacachale is a Timucua term meaning "to light a new fire". The ritual of starting and maintaining the fire was an important part of the belief system of the Timucua and other Southeastern native peoples. There's a great book on Florida Indians in the early contact period called Tacachale. I picked the name in 2011 due to my interests in Native South and Native Florida history.
Hahaha... Interesting question. I'm still not really sure of the answer other than, as you stated, the obvious: I was living on the westside and definitely didn't consider myself a 'redneck'. Southern might be appropriate, though. I've met quite a few of the regular posters IRL and pretty much to a person, I've been told that my personal self is unexpected based on my moniker here.
To help me out, I went and pulled my first post on the site:

This, as most of Baptist's projects, are all that's keeping some of the local industries viable. So far this year, they have pumped close to 10 mil into projects from downtown to the beaches. If I'm not mistaken, they are using their own money to finance these projects, and they only rely on contractors that are local - another boon for the local economy. I say all of this out of contempt for the 350 mil courthouse project that has been constructing using an out of state contractor, (mostly) out of state sub-contractors, etc.... Instead of recycling money in our own community, it's being outsourced to somewhere else (sorry for the vagueness, but I don't know who it is, and it's a little too late to care).
Back to my point - Baptist's newest project, the Wolfson Tower, will be an outstanding addition to the southbank, and a lot of us really appreciate their efforts.
Based on that time-stamp I can tell you that I just starting to recover from the housing crash and sort of entering another phase in life outlook. Due to many of the articles that I was reading here, it started my shift towards a definitive "urbanist" outlook since the sprawling development that I was accustomed to had been taken away. I guess you could say I was a bit jaded and really looking for some answers and this was really the first online forum that I signed up to and stuck with for any length of time.
My parents are Art and Maura White. They named me Adam, presumably after my paternal great grandfather.

My last name is Nooney. Drop the y and then you can start to understand why. Too much fun.
I do appreciate it when someone will send me a note saying they understood everything that I wrote.
Visit Jacksonville! Mr. Paul Astleford
I'm a UF grad with multiple family members and friends who are Florida A&M graduates. My wife also happens to be a senior administrator at FAMU. I've long sought to be a bridge between Florida's black flagship university and white flagship university, thus RattlerGator. I first used the name on a Gator sports board some 20 years ago.
"finehoe" is a name I've used on online forums for years. I'm not really sure of its origins.
It's my name

Based on your avatar, it's clear you're one fine ho.
There once was a place at the corner of Ocean and Adams called London Bridge... fondly referred to as The Bridge. A rather large group of regulars over time (I do not remember why) became known as bridgetrolls. I simply took that moniker as my avatar... 8)
Snufflee like Finehoe is a random name I have been using for years for 4Chan/Reddit/Steam and the myriad of other online forums that I peruse.
Osprey because I graduated from UNF and downtown because at the time I was living in Downtown Jax.

This forum clearly needs a "LIKE" button!!! :D
As for me, it's obviously my first name, last initial, but I use it as a memory of my father, who passed away in 1975. He was the only one who ever called me that, so it represents my keeping his memory alive.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis was my first video game and Sonic continues to be my favorite video game character even if his games haven't been that great (slight bias because super-speed is also my favorite super power); 101 is mostly random but its also kinda like the stereotypical introductory course in college. I modified the colors of a Sonic logo to make it Super Sonic for the thumbnail.

HA, I love it! That was our first game system we bought for our kids, and we fell in love with Sonic, as well. We just dug out the old Genesis earlier this year and played it. So much fun!
...and I have a good sense of humour. My opinions are always valid. I always smile.
jcjohnpaint is my email. I figured I would change it later, but could never figure out how. I guess I'll suffer with this moniker until the end of metrojacksonville. Next time I create a moniker, I hope to be more thoughtful and adventurous.
Hello All
I have been reading MetroJax for about two years. Ive never posted anything before but visit the site almost daily. I am a 28 year old Jax Beach resident that graduated from UF. I work at an environmental consulting company on the Southside. I choose RatTownRyan as my username because RatTown is a local term for Atlantic Beach, were I grew up. Hopefully the first post is the hardest and I can contribute my opinion more often. Thanks for all the great stories and debate on the forum.

I live on the Westside and I'm a guy.
Born and raised in Florida...land of the sand. Wearing sandals most of the time, it's bound to happen: sandy feet. The 's' was added years ago when I lost the name on a very early version of AOL and I wanted it back so I added the s.
I use it on multiple forums/places.
Excellent question with some great answers.

Bravo, TimmyB, bravo.
I'm the last Argonaut... still searching for the elusive Golden Fleece.
:-)
Discovered by the Germans in 1978, they named me Daveeeeeed, which of course means...eh nevermind. scholars maintained the translation was lost, long ago.
I wanted to use a Jacksonville historical reference for my screen name. Wacca Pilatka was ostensibly a Timucuan term for the area where downtown Jacksonville sits today - roughly meaning a place where cows could cross the river (due to its being narrow enough to be forded). Though the "Is 'Cowford' Just A Big Lie?" thread here on MJ pokes a number of sizable holes in that story, including the etymology.
My initials are CGM, but when I got my class ring it had the initials CG7. My friends have called me CG7 ever since.
My apartment was 312 when I lived in Gainesville, and I was a Gator. It's been my handle ever since.
I pee standing up, duh!
"That means he's a guy." Oh contraire dairy free, I could be using one of these things. https://go-girl.com/

Correct - it's a Seminole term! It's a corruption of the Muskogee (Creek) terms
wakv ("cow") and
pilotaikita ("crossing" or "boat crossing") - ie, "Cow Ford".
No big mystery here. Just my last name and occupation.

This article gives a slightly different etymology:
QuoteIt may be a Seminole word. Wacca (from the Spanish vaca) is the word the Seminoles used for cow. Wacca Pilatka is Seminole for cow crossing (there is a Wacahoota near Gainesville: Seminole for cow pens)."

That's mostly right, just simplifying. There's not a Seminole language; as an offshoot of the Muskogee (Creek), the Seminole speak two related languages, Muskogee and Mikasuki. The consensus among researchers seems to be that this name comes from Muskogee, still spoken today by some Seminole on the Brighton Reservation.
Wakv or
Waka (depending on the writing system) is the Muskogee word for "cow" (adapted from the Spanish
vaca). According to William A. Read (https://muse.jhu.edu/book/22525) and J. Clarence Simpson (http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00000484/00001/137j), Pilatka, also the source of the name Palatka, is a corruption of
pilotaikita, the Muskogee word for "boat crossing" (from
pilo, "boat", and
taikita, crossing). "Cow Ford" seems like a (somewhat off) translation of the Muskogee name. However, I don't personally know of any early sources where "Wacca Pilatka" appears that predate uses of "Cow Ford".
simple - I have degrees from both Temple University & Florida State University - and of course (somehow) they are both #1 :)
