We’re going to have another barn burner of a debate at Jacksonville University tonight - Democratic Congressional District 5 candidates are up! Incumbent Congresswoman Corrine Brown, who lost her Fair Districts challenge to keep her old district, stretching from Jacksonville to the Orlando, intact. She chose to run in the newly drawn District 5, still a minority access district, that now stretches from Jacksonville to Tallahassee.

Good Evening All! Debate is about to start. Tune in to Channel 4.
Totally different audience here tonight from the last two nights. I counted to black attendees last night; tonight the audience is predominantly black, which is to be expected since the newly redrawn District 5 is a minority access district (where the majority of the constituents in the district are racial or ethnic minorities).
Former Councilwoman Denise Lee is the only familiar face I see.
Candidates just came on stage.
Just saw Jacksonville Young Democrats prez Kristellys Estranga walk in. Denise Lee is sitting 4 seats down from me, so I can't wait to hear her commentary!
Denise Lee: "Oh Jesus" during LJ's opening remarks. She's not a fan apparently.
Denise Lee is currently having a phone convo lol
Kent Justice is moderating again tonight.
Brown: "I provide personalized service" I think a lot of constituents would agree.
All candidates talking about challenges of representing both rural and urban communities...lots of rural area between Tallahassee and Jax.
Holloway's touting her experience in DC in Rep. Carrie Meeks' office. She's a FL legend. LJ's showing off her knowledge of Congress.
Lawson is implying Brown has represented her constituents well. Was implying. Now he's going all out attacking her.
Brown is talking about Fair Districts and saying the federal courts did it...um, the voters of Florida did it and the courts enforced it. lol
Lawson and Holloway both citing Eureka Gardens as a failure of Brown's. Definitely a legit argument. Republicans
Kent's now asking about the 22 charges against Brown.
Does this disqualify you; should this disqualify you?
Brown: 5th amendments says prosecutors have to prove their case
Brown: Media is the 4th branch of government. You need to do your job.
Denise Lee's reaction: Wow
What you need to know...so far...totally different line of questioning.
Opening statements more about professional experiences and less about Team America

Brown's indictment continued:
Lawson: "We have a black attorney general bringing these charges and it's very serious" "I think my opponent should not be in the race and she's violating public trust." It's hard not to agree with that.
Brown: My constituents love me "This is a political witch hunt" "They don't want me in office"
Denise Lee's reaction to "This is a political witch hunt": "Oh please"
uh, Corrine,
says to Justice, "what if I called you pedophile?" I'd have to prove it, right? They have to prove their case against me.
Corrine, ultimately calls the charges a political game and an attempt to take her out of office.
"There was no relationship between those two situations" Lawson's response to Brown's comment that the justice department could've prevented Orlando if they weren't investigating her
YES! Call her out. That was a heinous and ridiculous comment from her and very insulting to the LGBT community IMO
L.J. Holloway, is this love? :-*
Bill Hay of WBOB and Denise Lee are having an intense discussion during the commercial break. Wish I could hear it cause I'm sure it's interesting lol
So, in response to answering to the charges against her (Brown) she brought up pedophilia and the orlando tragedy?
Is that what happened?
On Black Lives Matter:
Lawson: "Not a terrorist group; they're your kids and grandkids. It's very important." "Just like Blue Lives Matter is important."
Brown: I think all lives matter, but black lives matter is making a statement
Holloway: I do not believe BLM creates a terrorist threat. They need to be heard.
Polar opposite of last night's responses at District 4 debate. Shows the polarization of the parties.
Hillary's email investigation? Did she violate the law?
Holloway: Not sure of the protocols are when it comes to these things, but if she violated protocol, sanctions should've happened
Lawson: She apologized and there were irregularities. She should've been sanctioned "she broke the public trust"
Brown: "That shouldn't have been a question tonight"
Kent:"And yet it is"
lolz
...and the gloves come off.
Brown accuses Lawson of fraternizing with the Trump campaign. And later Lawson says "we need to secure our borders" He is branded as the conservative in the race.
Brown: [very loudly] "I support Barack Obama. I support Hillary Clinton" I am a yellow dog Democrat" some in the audience barked. seriously
One has to consider..."tea party" rhetoric often mentions the 2nd amendment as protection against government tyranny. What do they think it looks like when people decide to oppose perceived government tyranny? It's bullets, shot at police.
Corrine was right to force Kent off the mundane topics.
Do you support Obamacare?
Brown: "I would vote for it again" "We're sending back $50 billion back to the federal government...over 1 million Floridians would have coverage"
Holloway: I support it "I had a brain tumor and know what it was like to not be able to find insurance" "We need to expand it"
Lawson: 17 million Americans have been able to find insurance. But changes are needed. "Any piece of legislation is not perfect"
Lawson nailed it and I wish most Americans understood that! Good responses from all.
Lawson: "In Washington they throw money at everything"
He's getting all anti-gov and conservative again; this is a primary and that doesn't make sense to me at all. Seems like a bad strategy for this district. I would guess district is more socially conservative than fiscally
In the slim chance that Hillary Clinton wins the presidency ::) , Obamacare will no longer be subject to "repeal it" type of policial rhetoric.
The resurged debate and fight will totally center around the public option.
Thank you, NPR...
(today's subject on one of their shows)
I missed the stuff about Lawson and Trump.
Not sure where Denise Lee ran off to during the commercial break. Lynn Sherman, former City Council candidate is in front of me. She said she's undecided in this one right now.
Brown: applause line on "every one deserves a living wage" She accused Lawson of not working with AFSCME
Lawson: "She doesn't know what's going on in Tallahassee"
Brown's getting loud. "I do what I need to do in Washington"
Free college?
Brown: "We shouldn't be making the money off of the students" Why hasn't she sponsored a bill to lower my, and millions of others, federal loan interest rate then??
Holloway: Kids shouldn't be laden with debt when they graduate.
Lawson: We wouldn't be able to afford to send everyone to college free.
Lawson is the type of Republican we needed to see on the stage last night.
Closings
Brown: Thank you for letting me work for you for the last 24 years. Transportation, veterans, etc - I bring your taxpayer dollars back home.
Lawson: I helped Edward Waters $28 million dollars and brought money for the river. Going after that Jax vote
Holloway: I'm the only candidate with a law degree and can write legislation. Going after Lawson for voting to increase tuition
Denise Lee on Holloway: "she is really consumed with herself"
Lawson - goes for the knock out in her closing. Calls Corrine more of the same. Calls Brown a lobbyist who votes against teachers.

An odd thing to say in poltical debate...
Where was Diane Melendez (CheshireCat)?
With her background researching Corrine, I figured she would be a front row contestant.
For awhile I was wondering if Denise Lee was a candidate as well. You followed her pretty close for a non-participant.

Sitting next to Denise Lee at a debate like this is like winning the lottery...she always says exactly what she thinks in the most entertaining way possible. Had to share :D

you mean except for the part where he's a Democrat?
Anybody catch Lawson's reference to the "University of Jacksonville"? This Tally guy knows nothing about Jax. Next, please.
