Tonight, embattled incumbent Angela Corey, State Attorney in Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit Court, will go head-to-head with opponents Wes White and Melissa Nelson in what is sure to be a gloves-off debate live streamed on WJXT Channel 4 starting at 8 p.m. Corey still enjoys extensive Republican institutional support for her re-election campaign from folks like Mayor Lenny Curry, somewhat embattled himself as his approval rating has decreased after serving as emcee to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Jacksonville on August 3rd. technical difficulties with the stream code...plus working on an iPhone do to on going MacBook charger drama.
The debates have begun.
So far, the hard hitting and smart insulting is on.
A subdued audience.
Corey - tough on crime
Nelson: smart on crime
White: tough on repeat criminals
Have you tried a death penalty case?
Nelson- this is a weighty issue and yes there are two on death row now
Corey: my area of expertise is murder trials. Corey then hits Nelson with " I didn't let someone off of the death Penelty someone who serially killed" ...
White: death penalty is not cost effective...
Corey has framed her campaign around the death penalty
Stephen, maybe? He did the tough stuck routine but dialed back...calling death penalty cases a cottage industry and implied that's it's not very effective....
The black is bad conversation is beginning...police must be obeyed. Blue lives matter...
This is in response to should there be reform. White and Corey , pretty much said no.
Nelson is saying yes! "What we are doing is unsustainable."
How do you handle kids commuting crime:
Nelson: I defended Christian Fernandez...Corey was not interested in getting to the truth.
West: I believe our kids are disrespectful. We have t taught our kids God and country. UGH
I'm not sure which is more clear...voting for Clinton in the presidential or for Nelson in the SA race. Okay, that's not fair. I'd vote for Corey before trump as president...
Nelson goes after Corey on her political trickery to limit who can vote for sa.
So bias here, I'm a big fan of Nelson.
Corey defends her tricks, "Nelson, wants LIBERALS to vote for her" . The Supreme Court said its okay. So, you know, I 'm not going complain like a little baby (Nelson) who loves liberals...
Nelson responds : you should be concerned your chief law enforcement person is unwilling to own the trick she employed. This is your concern.
Best debate I've seen.
*best debate I've seen in awhile...but really looking forward to trump debates.
Corey throws her "great" campaign manager under the bus.
Angela Corey is like a passive aggressive telemarketer , " so, you think it's a good idea to remain ignorant and uninformed by not subscribing toUSA today. "
Not sure what Nelson was trying to do by "obviously I'm younger than my opponents"
The senior citizens in front of me were like "what da fudge"
Zimmerman is on...Corey would you do it differently
Corey: not really sure what Corey said but she said "the question is why did this case get som much [unnecessary] attention
Nelson: Corey said we charged Zimmerman for the ph lox
Corey: Nelson will have to prove that I said that. I expect proof. I never said that.
White: we should have talked about young people should be out at night...we should be talking about whether someone should be walking around untrained with a gun...America.
We re on a longer break. Audience not as subdued as I thought. "Spontaneous" Applause through the debate. At the start of break loud inaudible jeering.
Then 1 minute later "go Melissa, your great" the. Cheers
Holy shot!!! The crowd is losing it. Loud comments
"Don't listen to them Corey! You're doing great!"
Then
" Corey stinks!!'"
Crowd goes into perfect jerry springer style "ooooooooooh!"
Corey - leaders love me. Media is misleading you.
Nelson - people love me
White: I believe in people
In fairness to White, he believes that the wealthy are buying this election. "Ten men are spending 500k to get me out of the race"
God, it's like they based the mean girls movie on Corey. The sorority-sequel slams.
White: there are political thugs that control this society.
---I don't mind this talk track.
Justice: do you want to name names...
White: ....
Sorry assume **spoiler alerts**
Corey started out OK but is now patronizing. Melissa may be coming across as too smart for the general pub.
The public does seem a little out of control.
Oh my wow !!!
This is awesome...
Corey is hitting Nelson for mismanaging a case in a serious way...goes into a series of reasons as to why it was mismanaged
Nelson: Interesting that Corey says these things, Corey was my superviser at the time and assisted with the case!
Don't know that Melissa's answer helped her.
Yikes, this is heavy. Saying she relied on Corey for guidance does not make her look strong.
Corey- I was not her supervisor...I was her supervisor...
The beef here is Corey says Nelson should have tried for death penalty.
Nelson: this specific case followed the wishes of the victims family. They wanted a life sentence. I listen to victims.
Closing comments:
Nelson: I'm awesome. You know it. Corey made herself a millionaire with this job. It's her third term...white admitted last week that he needs a job...(white shrugs his shoulders...like he's saying yeah.)
WHITE: Nelson is shorstein. Corey is...missed it.
Corey: Nelson is a grand jury abuser. I've tried more cases than these two ever will.
I love this job. Those who know best want me here. Vote for law enforcement vote for Angela Corey.
So who do you think won with the voters?
I think Corey won it. :(
Angela runs her office like a statistician. Prosecution strategy is premised on probability of conviction and number of days in jail rather than culpability. Fundamentally, its as if the mantra of her office is time served=justice served rather than whats best for the community and for the rehabilitation of the offender as a productive member of society.
Basically, she can't see the forest for the trees ... its time for a change in my humble opinion.
The crowd got seriously rowdy during commercial breaks, mostly the Corey and Nelson folks going back & forth. The room was only about 3/4 full, with journalists, campaign staff and hardcore supporters making up the majority of the room. The audience was instructed to be quiet while the debate was happening so as not to interfere with the recording, but you heard a lot of gasps and muffled cheering when a candidate delivered an intense attack or said something crazy (as Wes White is prone to do). All in all, good crowd, fun debate.
Finishing up my analysis of the night's events, and we'll have that up in the morning.
Thanks for joining us for the live blog, y'all! :)
