Witnesses say he beat the dog and ignored an officer's orders to stop.

A man was arrested Thursday after the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said he viciously battered a 10- to 12-week-old puppy.

Witnesses told authorities a man repeatedly threw the female mixed-breed dog into Lake Broward in Pomona Park about 6:15 p.m., according to a Sheriff's Office report.

When the animal slipped beneath the surface, the man pulled it from the water and repeated the process. When the dog stopped moving, the man performed mouth-to-mouth and beat on its chest, reviving the animal only to continue the attack.

Witnesses also said the man swung the dog by its neck and legs and slammed it against a pole that was securing a floating dock, authorities said.

An officer ordered the man to leave the floating dock and come to shore, but the report said the man dragged the dog under the water and ignored the officer's orders. He eventually lifted the dog from the ocean to prolong the attack. The report said he swung the helpless animal around and shook it until the officer intervened.

Sabeno Martinez-Perez, 58, was charged with cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. An animal services officer took possession of the dog, which was reported doing well Friday.

I can't believe the adults watching didn't take action....how could anyone stand by and watch him, but thankfully someone at least called the police. Too bad he can't face the same kind of treatment
