Title: Jones Brothers Furniture Building- not original name?
Post by: Houseboat Mike on March 29, 2016, 11:00:33 PM
So I was over at vintage jacksonville (vintagejacksonville.net) and ran across a photo that shows the Jones Brothers building on Hogan street was originally called the "Standard Furniture Company".

Ironically, it appears that the church that was next to the current site of KBJ was just being built in this photo.

Damn lot is still a grass lot, even though they needed to tear it down for "Parking".

The house shown in the photo was torn down or relocated for the Federal reserve building, now the COJ emergency preparedness bunker.

The building in the Vintage Jax photograph opened as the Standard Furniture Company in 1926. Standard Furniture was owned by R.L. Jones. R.L's older brother owned the Jones Furniture Company on Main Street. The Main Street building was completed in 1913 (and torn down during the 1960s). At some point, R.L Jones' sons purchased Jones Furniture Company and merged it with Standard. My guess is they kept the Jones name instead of Standard and operated out of the Hogan Street building. After they moved out of the Main Street building, it was taken over by Haverty's.
