Title: Shock and Awe on Nira
Post by: acme54321 on March 04, 2016, 12:26:02 PM
Does anyone know what's up with all of the demolitions on the south side of Nira?  5 or 6 bungalows have been leveled over the last few days.

If near Baptist Hospital, my guess would be for the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

^That would be my guess.

I didn't think the hospital was going to affect the south side of Nira.  Was this west of San Marco Blvd, or east?

These are dilapidated houses on six lots owned by a single landlord, Elizabeth's Rentals, registered to a San Jose address. No idea what the landowner's plans are. As of February 15, the Building Inspection Division had demolition permits on two of them. I wasn't aware they were taking out more than that.

Nira is for some very heavy activity. Plans for M.D. Anderson call for a multi-story parking garage on the entire area of the JOI parking lot opposite these demolitions, with an entrance on Nira. Planned enhancements include a multi-use path connecting the Fuller-Warren BikePed path to The District along the north side of Nira. If done well, it could be a model streetscape renovation.

A multi use path connecting those 2 portions of the river walk will be awesome.  A loop from healthy town down the south bank riverwalk to the Main street bridge, down the north bank riverwalk to the fuller warren and then back down Nira to healthy town will be 5.25 miles of running and biking bliss.  Is there any plan to connect the fuller warren ramp into Baptist's private riverwalk or cross the train tracks on the south bank?  A nice 2 mile south bank loop would be great for the area.

Happened to catch a noticed meeting held by councilwoman Lori Boyer on the 4th floor with Bruce Fouraker when another meeting we were going to attend was canceled. Just dumb luck. Don't know if any of that has been announced Publicly. Huge plans for the area. It has been awhile since that meeting but the connectivity was discussed. As I recall the Public Access to the River wasn't going to be much to brag about.

I doubt it has anything to do with MD Anderson. The demolitions are taking place east of San Marco Blvd at Nira & Flagler.

Is that shared-use path connecting the Fuller-Warren to The District for real? That would be transformational for the stretches of Larue, Belmonte and Flagler north of LaSalle and south of Nira.

I like how NOONE almost contributed to the discussion and then switched right back into his river-talk.

Noticed more action on Nira yesterday.  Three or 4 public hearing signs along the parking on thenorth side of Nira from the tracks to the Baptist/JOI building.  Anyone know anything?  They said something about a PUD but I was going by too fast to read them.

Pretty sure it is the PUD for M.D.Anderson. They were at the Southeast CPAC Monday night. Apparently presented to the CPAC zoning committee before the regular meeting, and hung around for the meeting.

I believe they will be building two parking garages as a part of the M.D. Anderson project.  One will be in/or replace a portion of the parking lot on the northside of Nira that's adjacent to the railroad tracks.

The MD Anderson project is going to change that area a lot more than I was expecting

Two more houses came down in the past week or so, making for a total of five demolitions. All but one house between Belmont and Flagler has been cleared on the south side of Nira. This seems like a lot of land clearing for a shared-use path. These houses weren't any closer to the roadway than anything else along Nira. Are there going to be more demos?

^The houses being torn down on the south side of Nira have nothing to do with the Baptist/MD Anderson project and the related shared-use path. Both of those will be located on the north side of the street.

I have no idea. I just know that the properties on the south side of the street were not included in the PUD rezoning for the cancer center.

Well, I am going to try and take advantage of the empty lots and ask all the residents of LaSalle to send a request to JTA and have the Routes for 8(A&B) changed to go down Nira instead of LaSalle. It doesn't matter how many times we complain the buses are speeding down LaSalle, they will keep doing it again. And now that there are only 3 residential homes on Nira. Those buses shake our house every 30 minutes from 6:30 am - 10:30pm.

I've been chased by a city bus while out on the bike in that area So many times. I usually just go a little faster and dip out on one of the side streets, but even then, they seem to chase me until the bus stop on Children's Way & LeBaron.

Noticed today that another one has bit the dust sometime recently at the corner of Nira and Larue.  It seemed like a dent house too.
