Title: Deaths on Roosevelt Boulevard (Ortega through I 10 stretch)
Post by: Presuming Ed on February 18, 2016, 10:34:48 AM
Is it me or are there a strikingly high number of fatal accidents on that stretch of Roosevelt - basically from Timuquana north to I 10?

The pedestrian crossing at Ortega Forest Drive is a particular challenge - I seem to remember that nice guy in the electric wheelchair with the dog that you used to see around the place was killed there a couple of years ago. This is the latest. 20 year old UNF student:

(Yes, I know, interesting news angle - the sheer inconvenience....)

Are these fatalities a well-known and acknowledged problem? Has it been discussed before? Do we know if it is being addressed in any way?

Yup, the stretches between the Ortega River and Timuquana as well as between Edgewood and I-10 are pretty awful.

The recent fatalities on the Ortega side were due to extreme driver recklessness whereas this accident was probably just caused by garden-variety recklessness.

/sarcasm

FDOT don't care.

I used to live in that area until last year.  FDOT changed the continuous green light in the two right northbound lanes of Roosevelt at Long Bow a year or two ago after an accident.  I think there was another continuous green further north on Roosevelt that was eliminated.  Now all 3 lanes have to stop.  I know there was some discussion about making the yellow lights last a little longer before turning to red, but I'm not sure what happened with that.

There is a neighborhood group that meets with the JSO on a regular basis (SHADCO?).  They have periodic meetings at one of the churches on Roosevelt - I think it's Ortega Methodist.  Ortega Forest has a homeowners' group that is pretty involved.  Sorry I don't have any contacts there or I'd forward some names to you.

Here's a link for the Sherrif's Advisory Council (SHADCO): http://www.coj.net/departments/sheriffs-office/citizen-involvement/sheriff-s-advisory-councils-(shadcos).aspx (http://www.coj.net/departments/sheriffs-office/citizen-involvement/sheriff-s-advisory-councils-(shadcos).aspx)  That area is in Zone 4 and the Zone Commander is Officer Larry Gayle.  Their substation's phone number is 904-573-3165.

That whole intersection south of McDuff is not the greatest of designs.  The trees in the median combined with the curve in 17 can interfere with a driver's view of oncoming Southbound traffic.

Combine that with distracted or impatient drivers and you end up with a crash like this.

I wonder if this tragic accident will end up spurring any change.

I knew the girl in this crash. Such a terrible loss, she was a wonderful person. Jax needs to look into all of the very dangerous roadways around town but at the end of the day reckless drivers will still be a problem until cars start driving themselves.

I would guess speed is a major contributor. Drive the posted 45 mph, and you get run over.

Looks like something might have happened this morning too, there were lots of cops and emergency vehicles in the same location as Sunday's crash.

^ good grief.

Someone texted me and said they though the city was doing some kind of study on this. Can anyone corroborate?

(I know it sounds like a point from Rob Middleton's piece: a classic "unfinished study")

Normally in the morning the accidents in that area are due to people heading south trying to make the left turn onto Randall Street. The two  most inside lanes are almost always stopped or at a slow crawl, but the outside lane is usually not backed up right there, and the cars in that lane are typically moving quick. Drivers turning left think they're in the clear since 2 of the lanes are stopped with an opening, and then they get creamed by a car in the far right lane.

Apparently FDOT has engaged in something, acknowledgement that somethin' ain't right.

Too much open space/open horizon section/travelers in rush, frustrated, posted speed limits long ignored

I live right on day ave and roosevelt near mcduff and I can tell you there is a least one crash a week sometimes more and I suspect there have been multiple deaths there. Its not a fun thing waking up to the sound of squealing tires and then hearing a crash.

They need to get rid of that turnabout and then do something to alert drivers coming off of I-10 that a light is coming.

Agree about alerting people about the light coming off I-10. I drive that stretch everyday and multiple times have had people almost run into me because they aren't expecting to come to a complete stop.

I think getting rid of some of the unsignalized intersections might help. The Randall St/Roosevelt intersection is definitely a dangerous one. More people turning at either McDuff or Edgewood would be safer.

Add a bicyclist getting hit by a car to the list. Happened at Roosevelt and Plymouth at around 9:30 tonight.
