:-\ Hopefully this does not put a dent into Hyatt's pocket book...

One of the last — and most used — stretches of Coastline Drive along the Northbank Riverwalk is closed to vehicles and pedestrians, effective this afternoon.
The portion in front of the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront is used by walkers and joggers along with hotel guests and car traffic. It will be out of service at the order of the Florida Department of Transportation.
According to department spokesman Ron Tittle, there is increased deterioration of the structure that warrants the closing.

I went through there yesterday and was going to mention on here that the roadway had shifted and would probably collapse soon.
At this point the riverwalk is closed from Berkman plaza to Hogan Street. Pretty sad.
Wow, what a mess.
what an absolute mess. What is the schedule to fix this?
Are the buildings in any danger??? That would be my first concern...
^No.

There may not be one. Apparently nothing can happen downtown until the pension issue is resolved.

This is on FDOT though, not the city, correct?
Before the pension ultimatum, the City was going to get started later this year.
These are city streets, I think the FDOT just inspects these bridges.

This is a city Job. The procurement for a Design Build solution is underway. Budget is above 30M I think and its already secured so the pension situation shouldn't affect this. The three DB teams have been selected and their designs should begin shortly. I am pretty sure that the selection is set for April/May with construction beginning soon after. There is a project starting soon to re route Hyatt traffic between Market and Newnan in the area behind the bulkhead and bridge.

Good Grief. We can afford 45 million giveaways to Shad Kahn (and now apparently another 170 million in environmental cleanups?)
But at least the riverfront is literally falling into the water, and Hogan's Creek is crumbling into ineffectiveness.
Has anyone bothered asking themselves what happens to that artificially restrained canal right in the middle of the historic neighborhood when the actual retaining walls crumble and the creeks resumes its natural shape?
People died in the quick mud on a monthly basis up until the 1920s.
8 years of Peyton negligence, followed by 4 years of the Depression and Alvin Brown have created a pretty mess, but I have to say, no great competence is being shown downtown under the present admin either.
Somewhere Sam Mousa is throwing his hands up in the air.

How long are designs supposed to take?
Does the city's design/build job include this segment of Coastline Drive? Anyway, the build portion will take longer than a year, so get used to the mess. Hopefully, this won't negatively impact Hyatt's business.
It is pretty crazy that Jacksonville can drag it's feet for decades on this type of stuff.
QuoteTransportation department reports in 2002 and 2004 recommend that the city either repair pilings in the area or attach electrodes to the pilings to slow corrosion. And in 2003 and 2005, it was recommended that the city repair the concrete beams under the structure.
Then, on December 28th 2006, a section of the piers collapsed, shutting down the riverwalk as well as Coastline Drive.

If I remember the graphics I saw at a meeting, yes, the "fix" includes the Hyatt section.

I think that will be up to the winning team. I do think I remember seeing an overall schedule of 650 days if I am not mistaken. That is from NTP to project substantial completion. The project includes that demo of the courthouse parking lot, addition of angle parking along Market and Liberty and the re-routing of the Riverwalk.
I can't believe I used to kayak, fish under the parking lot. :o The degradation of pillings etc was quite evident. Including beneath the condos on the Southeast corner......
Apparently work is starting June 30th:
The closing of Coastline Drive in front of the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront wasn't the only development for the Northbank Riverwalk last week.
The St. Johns Water Management District notified the city Friday it has received permit applications to replace Coastline Drive and the Liberty Street bridge.
The latter was a portion of the Northbank that fell into the St. Johns River last February, spurring more than a year of the bridge being shut down and consistent inspections. That part of Liberty Street is considered a bridge because it's over water.
The project also includes demolition of the old Duval County Courthouse parking lot that adjoins the collapsed area.
The project is scheduled to start June 30 and end a year later, according to an environmental resource permit.
