Title: Marcus Lemonis, Sweet Pete's owner wants a new Miami Hurricane's stadium

During the Miami Hurricanes final home game today against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, CNBC's Marcus Lemonis made a video plea/challenge to all Canes fans and the UM administration to build a stadium that the Canes can once again call their true home.  As I have suggested for years, one of the more ideal locations would be TropicalPark, which is only 3 miles down Miller Road from Campus, has a footprint in place for a stadium and has access from two major highways as well as Miller and Bird roads, not to mention plenty of space for parking and tailgating.  Mr. Lemonis, aka "The PROFIT" also thinks Tropical Park is an ideal spot as does Canes Football Legend Alonzo Highsmith.   Lemonis published this video on his Facebook page, pledging $1 million to kick start the fundraising for this cause:

Just use a local high school stadium. You want it to look full, don't you?

I love when he says "there are a ton of people in the stadium..." while pointing back at all the empty seats.  Then he says, "driving up to Sun Life Stadium is too far".  Tell that to the UF and FSU fans that drive 2-4 hours each way regularly (and some even drive from So Fla).

Yep, Miami deserves its own stadium!

Maybe he just meant there were 2000 people there.

Hmm, I wonder if the historical enrollment and overall number of alumni has something to do with large state schools having a larger number of fanatic fans to pull from than a small private school does?

Lake, there really are high school teams that outdraw the 'Canes.

FYI I have a couple of Graduate degrees from UM. School of Music, as you might have surmised.

I've heard that even if the school had the money  to pay for a new stadium in Tropical Park the logistics just wouldn't work. Coral Gables is a huge NIMBY town that would do its best to block a stadium being built and the school acquiring the land from the county is far from a guarantee.

Pledging $1mil is not much for seed money on a stadium.  But I guess it would not have to be build for 85,000 fans.

So Miami just scheduled a Home and Home with App St?!  And they are going TO Arkansas State, Toledo, and Cincy in the coming years?!?

None of this screams resurgent program ready to spend on coach or stadium.

What is really crazy is I think Miami is probably doing this because they can get more revenue from the away game than they can from non-conference home games against lesser opponents. App State, Arkansas State, and Toledo will all drum up a lot of interest in their programs in their respective communities/states and will sell out, so I imagine they are offering Miami a healthy payout to play there.

hey now...Cincy has been a pretty decent team the past few years....and Toledo only has one loss!

The problem at Miami is two-fold: they aren't forward-thinking, that's problem number one. The second problem is that there is a serious town-gown disconnect. The disconnect? The eggheads want Miami to more seriously ape the northeastern private universities and the fans of the Hurricanes want a football program that has the vibe of South Florida.

Those two things don't go together, not even a little bit. Think Donna Shalala and Uncle Luke of 2LiveCrew fame.

Yowza !!!

Miami could make a decision right now to build an on-campus stadium in the space currently occupied by their track & field / soccer stadium (Cobb Stadium)
http://www.hurricanesports.com/fls/28700/UFacilities/facilities/white/folio/cobbstadium.html

and throw in some of their Greentree Practice Fields . . . voilĂ , plenty of space for an on-campus football stadium seating around 40,000 people!

http://uhealthsystem.com/documents/UHealth_site_CG_Campus_Map.pdf

Whatever political opposition from the City of Coral Gables that exists (zoning, etc.) could be dealt with -- even if it means going to the Florida Legislature.

But the eggheads don't want that crazy 'Canes football crowd stumbling around campus, nor do they know how to be honest with their football constituents, and everywhere else you looks it's NIMBY NIMBY NIMBY.

^^^Remember RG, you can't critique another city, because as many on MJ says "Jax has no room to talk" and therefore any criticism brought up is a moot point. *sarcasm*

I'm actually looking for comment from Lakelander, MusicMan, camarocane, etc. -- Miami is a fascinating place, definitely the capital of the Americas. It would be better if they could just pick the football program up and drop it in the lap of FIU. That place *does* have the student body that represents the vibe of Miami. UM? Caracas, Rio, Mexico City, Madrid, suburban NJ, suburban NY -- yes -- but Liberty City, Allapattah, Overtown, El Portal, Miami Gardens? No, sir. No, sir buddy.

Bigtime Canes football may be a lost cause. And that would be a shame.

Regardless of the stadium situation (should have kept the Orange Bowl...), the Canes will be back. Too much talent in the area. Every big time program goes through cycles. Nevertheless, even Golden's classes have stocked the NFL with quality talent. Just look at the Jags. Hurns, one of your best WRs was an average guy at UM. Heck, one of your best lineman is also a former cane from the Golden era. Canes will be fine with someone who can recruit locally and develop a system that plays to their player's strengths.

Straying from topic, UM is making waves in the classical music world. They clearly have visions of something grand for their music dept and are spending the money to do it. Has been surprising to say the least. Musicman my have more insight.
