Title: Selling a Titleless car in FL: ideas?
Post by: ben says on October 21, 2015, 12:37:02 PM
Hi all,

Trying to sell my 2003 E500 Benz...but for one reason or the other, no title (don't ask).

What's the best way to get rid of it? Sell it for parts? Mercedes specialist?

Thoughts?

You could: http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/replacing-a-lost-title.php (http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/replacing-a-lost-title.php)

That, or you could sell it as the classiest mud/hunting vehicle.

Who was the last person to title it?    How are you registering it without a title?  Is it salvage title?  We really need to know the "don't ask" part.

If you weren't the last person on the title you're pretty much SOL if you want to get a title in FL.  I'm imaging you aren't since you're asking this question.

There are some services in other states that only require a bill of sale where you "sell" them the car and then they mail you a title back.  That depends on the state and their specific laws.  I believe Maine is (or was) one of the go tos.  I have no direct experience with this, only research from a few years ago where I dealt with a similar situation on a boat.

Your other option is a bonded title.  Basically you give the state a chunk of money and a bunch of info and they give you a bonded title.  After a few years and no one comes forward saying that the car is theirs you get a real title in your name.  If someone does come forward with the title saying the car is theirs you're basically SOL and probably in some hot water.  Can't sell the car though until then either (I don't think).

You could always call the number on one of those signs on the side of the road that says, "Sell your car for cash, no title OK."  Might not get top dollar for it though.
