Police have cordoned off a parking garage at Baptist Medical Center following gunshots early this evening.

Jacksonville police said a man shot his 11-year-old son and the boy’s mother before turning the gun on himself.

The man died and the woman was taken to Shands Jacksonville in critical condition. The boy was in fair condition, according to Chief Rick Graham of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office

A secretary at the center told the Times-Union she heard shots about 5:40 p.m. and could see security guards heading to the parking garage toward the emergency room.

This is horrific. WTF is wrong with people?!???? Baptist has one of only two pediatric hospitals in the city (the other being Shands). The Ped ER entrance is right there!! This a new low, even for this city.

Only the survivors of this incident will be able to give details as to what led to this incident, but one thing is sadly clear; the Father/ I presume, husband, boyfriend, whatever, had lost it!  This is horrible!! and probably something that if the survivors do actually make it, they may never get over.  Reading over the comments that followed, One commented "This is why I left Jacksonville" .  I hate to lay this on them, this sort of crazy stuff is happening everywhere.  Unbelievable!   It is getting to a point in the world ,where we do need surveillance cameras and security on every corner.  Even if there had been a team of Police personnel , that may not have stopped this incident.   This is so sad.:(

At least the "third shot" found a proper target.

Last week I made a few visits to St.Vincents visiting a patient.

Many historical photos displayed throughout the hallways- series of aerial photos of the riverfront location depicting the transformation.Progress.

One afternoon there was an altercation in the guest parking garage- it seemed strange that there would be such an episode in that setting.
I thought back to the photos of the 50's...60's......70's...? Such an episode less likely then??

I've been there for almost 15 years and stuff happens in the garages every now and then. As far as families acting like idiots, there's probably a fight or security has to escort someone out at least a few times a month. I don't think anyone's been robbed or had their car broken into in a good while now but it does happen from time to time. I work nights and everytime I pull into the garage I'm just so grateful I don't have to work at Shand's.
