Title: TSI closing?
Post by: Adam White on September 13, 2015, 06:51:59 AM
I've seen chatter on Facebook that indicates TSI is closing. Is this true? I was going to message Jason and ask him, but I don't know if it's a sore subject and I don't want to rub salt in the wound if it is.

If the club is closing, that's a bit of a blow for downtown Jax.

DT Jax needs a good club for house music. TSI isn't bad per say but they could do a lot better. A lot of times when I try to go there it's dead. Wish them the best but I hope this at least gets them to double down their efforts or maybe someone else could come in and do a better job.

Yes next weekend is the last weekend of TSI.

They guys are just basically ready to do something else.  Its been 12 years of late late nights and party fun, and it takes its toll on you (seriously, until you do it, you simply cannot imagine how exhausting the business is)

The space will be taken over by DJ Kinesis which is a pretty great choice.

That's a shame, but it makes sense. 12 years is a long time, especially compared to their peers. They've done well. I had plenty of great times at both TSIs. I'm glad something will stay in that location - it's really a great space.

Best shows at TSI: 1) Diplo (before he was the super huge superstar he is today. This show was simply amazing); 2) The Death Set; 3) Dan Deacon.

Worst: that Ladytron DJ set.  Can't believe I paid money for that.

That place gave me some great memories.

I think I was at the Diplo show (with Bonde do Role, maybe?)

Edit: I think maybe it was just Bonde do Role, sans Diplo.

Had some great times there. But it will be nice to see it get a face lift.

QuoteRecently, however, the venue has had its difficulties. Business was dropping off, and Club TSI's lease was about to expire. That was when Grimes and Rummel made the decision to close for good.

Grimes said that part of the problem is the influx of other live music venues, like 1904 Music Hall, Burro Bar and Underbelly, which are all within walking distance of Club TSI.

"It's two factors — I don't think as many people are out in general in Downtown," Grimes said. "Eleven years ago when we opened, there were less options. Now, there are 13 places in Downtown to choose from."

I guess in many ways, they were a victim of their own success. They blazed a trail of sorts, as they moved to downtown when it was in a bit of a fallow period. On the one hand, it's great that there are so many more things downtown now - but it's a shame downtown has to struggle to accomodate them all.
