James Weldon Johnson, a Jacksonville native was one of the pivotal cultural figures in American History. He was primarily a man of letters, music and experimental theater and his ideas provided much of the intellectual impetus of African American culture over the past 100 years. Here is one of his most eloquent essays on the importance of cultural parity to generations of African Americans who would come after him. It is a preface from the 1922 Book of American Negro Poetry.
