German bank picks city for 950 jobs

QuotePlanning is under way for a July 23 ribbon-cutting at the Southside site on Gate Parkway where Deutsche Bank will establish the office, said Jerry Mallot, executive director of Cornerstone, which works in partnership with the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce on economic development.

Mallot called Deutsche Bank a "major deal" for Jacksonville and said it's only the second time in many years a company has arrived with a commitment to adding at least 1,000 jobs. In 2006, Boston-based Fidelity Investments said it would employ 1,200 people within four years. (Fidelity Investments is different from Fidelity National, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Jacksonville).

Deutsche Bank will fill out its 1,000-employee hub by the end of 2011 with an average wage of $49,200.

Is it existing office space or new construction?  What's the look?

YES!  Great news.  1000 new high paying jobs is a significant boost to the local economy.

So glad we're adding another soul-less office building to the sickeningly suburban southside.. Nevermind all that traffic... and nevermind the glut of land and existing building space DOWNTOWN.

It would be nice to see these jobs Downtown. Imagine driving down I-95 and seeing a large Deutsche Bank sign affixed to the top of one of our buildings. But, thats not going to happen. I'm sure the City is just happy to be getting the jobs, no matter where they locate. You would think a German based company would be a little more inclined to locate in the core.

I would love to see them locate downtown too but I would prefer them to be on the Southside than in another city.  Downtown and the urban core will benefit tangentially from all of the good jobs as some employees will choose to at least live and spend money in these areas.

I believe Duetsche is moving into an existing building.  In any event, Riverside is right on.  This thing was always intended for the Southside and its better to have them on Gate Parkway, than in suburban Nashville.  If we really want these companies to start seriously considering downtown, then the city has to first make a serious effort to level the playing field between the core the suburbs.

QuoteThe bank has a 51,000-square-foot facility at 5022 S. Gate Parkway that it plans to renovate and to expand by an additional 100,000 to 125,000 square feet. Deutsche Bank will invest $4.9 million in tenant leasehold improvements and $7.2 million in technology infrastructure and furniture, it said in its incentive filing.

QuoteAs part of its first phase, Deutsche Bank will hire about 400 by the end of 2008, Lafond said.

About 30 employees will be relocated from New York City and New Jersey offices. The bank hired about 100 primarily from area universities as of July 7 and there are more than 90 postings through external online job searches. The average annual wage is $49,200 plus benefits.

A majority of the positions will be entry-level and will serve two back-office subsidiaries for the investment banking arm of the company, DB Services New Jersey Inc. and DB Security Services New Jersey Inc.

Since they're moving into an existing structure on Gate, that'd lead me to believe that rent's cheaper there than anywhere in the Core, no?  Or at least, certainly that was a contributing factor in the decision to move into Gate Parkway than a vacant section of the Pru or the AT&T building or some such?

S'all about the bottom line.

Furthermore - they hired some straight out of the local university system.  Bonus for the local kids!  And given its location, it'll help funnel retail and food traffic into Tapestry Park.  And theoretically - given gas prices and the oncoming trend to live closer to your place of employment - that might also help fill residential vacancies in T.P. as well as the new Atlantic Crossing, Sail Cove, Murabella, and the other complexes in that general area.  Does nothing for traffic in there, granted, but...
