I've got some associates looking to open a high quality, hip/modern coffee space. Bold Bean and Brew pretty much have Riverside on lockdown.
Where is the next best location between Murray Hill and Springfield?
Do Knead and Three Layers even play into the thought process?
Which residents will latch on and support?
Will outsiders travel to either hood for a good product?
Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated!
Try somewhere downtown like the old bar Atticus which was at 325 W. Forsyth Street. Perfect location downtown, right across from the EverBank 30-story tower so plenty of morning and mid-day business. On the same block as Big Pete's Pizza.
The old City Kidz next to Uptown Kitchen in Springfield is now available (with grease trap) at a very attractive rate. Your associates can call Bill at 396-9601.
There is also an additional space in Brooklyn Station (little bit higher $/sq ft... but much more attractive space) and can call Patrick at 598-7468. There is another option, which is a kiosk being constructed at 220 Riverside on the corner of Riverside/Forrest that would be ideal for a coffee shop. 363-9002
Or even the old fire station on Riverside. That place is so cool...it needs new life. Make it a cool eatery/coffee shop and open those bay doors when it's open.
I would prefer Murray Hill for selfish and personal reasons ;D
Thanks field and menace!
@camarocane - Are there more of you? Do you think a hangout type of coffee shop would fill a neighborhood need or would the market be saturated with Knead in the hood and Bold Bean close by?
Hopefully Edgewood Bakery will resume these types of services in their dining area. Hopefully!
I think Murray Hill badly needs this kind of thing. There is a strong neighborhood community there and could definitely use more gathering spaces. That said, I am biased as I potentially have commercial space on Edgewood coming available that we'd love to house a coffee shop in.
Field's suggestions all sound like excellent spaces as well...next to Uptown Kitchen can draw spillover crowd and is a decent distance from Three Layers. And of course Brooklyn is a great spot for something upscale.
Or be smart and come to San Marco ;)
I think they'd probably get some good spaces in Brooklyn. Downtown would be good for the morning office crowd.
My opinion is biased, as I live in Springfield. Of course I believe Springfield is the better choice, and if Sweet Pete's or Tres Leches is any indicator, the neighborhood has a good ability of incubating start-ups. My only suggestion would be to stick to a Main Street location. Also proximity to Uptown may create some synergy.

Would you mind DM-ing me some details/contact info?
Murray Hill. I don't live in either & don't have a dog in this fight, but its clearly the one with the most momentum lately as far as businesses goes. As Riverside gets more expensive & people get priced out, they'll likely eye the adjacent MH district.
Besides, Springfield already has Three Layers & I don't think it could sustain another coffee shop that's similar at this point. Whereas MH has nothing at all right now in this regard. Its ripe for one IMO.
Murray Hill - especially if you will be open in the evenings! Maple Street and Knead aren't (except Maple on Friday and Saturday night). There is a space becoming available in the block with Swimming yesterday and the wine shop I believe...just ask Anthony in the tobacco shop. He seems to know what's going on. Lots of parking too!
Just remember that Bold Bean is already planning on turning their roastery into a café right there on Edgewood.

I'm pretty sure it's just going to be a walkup window. Not a cafe environment that lends itself to hanging around. Which is what MH needs, imo. Wish i could start one myself!

Yes, this.
Which is why I made the Springfield and Brooklyn suggestions.

You've got your Starbucks, Pulp and Panera Bread already, yuppie. :P

That's really cool. Is there a time frame for that?

Is the Bold Bean window going to be limited to the same hours as Knead?
This concept would be the full community coffee house experience. I think Knead + coffee window would trim a bit of profit, but these would be two different experiences for sure...
I'm in favor of a San Marco location as well. I live in Riverside, halfway between the Stockton Bold Bean and Murray Hill Bold Bean/Knead. I currently spend a lot of my coffeeshop time fairly evenly divided between Stockton Bold Bean and BREW. I'm not sure that Murray Hill will be able to sustain another coffeeshop after Murray Hill Bold Bean opens. (Yet. I do believe that MH will be able to in a few more years though.) San Marco desperately needs a good local coffeeshop now. The place is a coffee desert. It's sad, because I think that the people who live there would appreciate a good locally owned coffeeshop.
Murray hill allllll the way. Springfield's strip is very limited. Murray hills strip is growing and getting nicer in my opinion.
Have you thought about the place across Park St from Orsay? It's been vacant for quite some time now and in a good location.
With regards to MH, we do have Knead and a soon to be opened Bold Bean window on the strip.
These two cater to the types of people you would typically associate with these places, myself included, and I don't think the area would sustain another nearby. The 'other' coffee drinkers have a Dunkin Donuts on the other side of MH at Ramona and Cassat.
(Yes, I'm stereotyping, but you need to when figuring a market)
Knead and the Bold Bean window do not supply the same type of environment as an actual cafe. Knead is only open until 2, and who knows what hours the window will operate.
An actual cafe all day, with tables, chairs, sofas, art, music, etc. could be really great for Murray Hill, as residents have no real upscale gathering place or watering hole.
Just my .02 as a MH resident!

I agree with this statement.
Maybe some sort of collaboration rather than direct competition?
Most places in Murray Hill close at 2pm. We NEED another place that will be open past 2pm. It also has to be open on sundays lol. I'm tired of everything in the hill being closed on Sunday. I think community loaves and knead are the only two places open on Sundays.

Of course it is, its NOT VACANT like most of Main Street. No one shops a strip with so many vacancies!

There is almost no parking, and when the new restaurant comes in next to Orsay, all that parking will be gone too.
Hmmmm . . . no consideration for something closer to the UF Health campus? Near 8th at Boulevard ??? Seems like an opportunity to me.

Uptown sure is struggling...or not!
ICP, can you check your PM? Thanks!
Haha. This was necessary. I wrote you back ;)
Lol...no worries. I mean you did tell me before that you never see your PMs. 8)

Hello everyone. The Bold Bean roastery cafe will be open some time in August. The cafe will will have 10 bar seats and it'll be connected to Knead via a walk through. We're going to focus on espresso in this space. We'll start with the same hours as Knead but may expand depending on demand. This cafe will be right inside the roasting facility. It'll be the place to go to get excellent espresso and espresso beverages but may not be as conducive to extended hanging out (unless your are as coffee geeky as us :) ) as our other cafes, being that it's basically in a manufacturing facility. We are extremely excited about the experience that this space will offer but it'll be different from our other cafes. It'll be a real great place to experience coffee and have it at its very best. Knead will be expanding their menu upon the opening of the roastery cafe as well. If you're in the neighborhood feel free to pop your head in to the roastery. If I'm around I'd love to pull any of y'all a shot. -Zack
Any tours in the future?
Once we get everything in place over there we'd like to resume our weekly cuppings (coffee tastings) and we've got some roasting demos and other coffee related events in mind as well. It's a small space so no tours really but we are excited that we will soon be able to share this space and what we do over there with everyone.
Bold Bean Zack,
My question would be if the new cafe will be serving the types of coffee as Bold Bean. I love Knead, but hate I can't just get a Cafe au lait. They had no way to even heat up a milk. Love, love all the breads and pastries.
We'll be serving a simplified menu at the roastery but it will include both hot and iced lattes and americanos, espresso, cappuccinos, macchiatos, cortados, flat white, etc. It'll be real nice to get proper espresso beverages along with all the offerings at Knead.
hey murray hill, you can stfu about the 'where's our coffeeshop?' talk! Vagabond opening in your hood.

You think they will continue to operate the Hemming Park trailer?
OMFG! Wow, super excited! Can't wait :)
This is very confusing. I remember reading Vagabond was going brick-n-mortar somewhere downtown, inside a downtown building.
ICP, are these your boys? Excited for them.
Supposed to be Barnett Bank Building, but that wasn't going to happen.
Super stoked for this, as I live right down the street!
The trailer in Hemming will still be operational. The Barnett shop is, like the Barnett itself, somewhere in limbo.

You got it, Max. Did they get in touch?
^nope. I'm in Canada for the next 2 weeks but still responding to my voicemails, texts and emails so I'll keep checking. No worries though, Im sure they are busy.
Would like to see a nice coffee shop in the EverBank Center. There's a few vacancies on the ground floor...high traffic. People are here 7am-9pm M-F.
There's gonna be a Vagabond?!?!
Will it be another cart, or a brick and mortar?
As another Murray Hill resident, I am SO EXCITE! either way!
I will say that an evening chill spot, that is NOT a bar atmosphere would be well patronized.

Full B&M in the old Fringe space next to MH Theater.
