The Billboard Wars are Back!

The little Veterans Memorial Arena banner being fought over in Jacksonville is nothing compared to another billboard that could possibly be approved this week!

Wow! The advertising opportunities are boundless. Just think how great a display could be made by the manufacturers of condoms.
Will there also be an observation deck or restaurant? It would be a shame to have something so big used only for signage.
Regarding the Arena, how is the arena different than the baseball field, Jaguars field, and many high school fields, etc?
I fail to see how advertising at the Arena is disrespectful to Veterans. It is not a memorial.
Sorry Scenic Jacksonville, I think advertising on the arena is one of the few places I see a true economic benefit. If I had it my way, I'd ban all billboards on freeways and restrict sign heights, not to mention ban sign holders. Do that, then Jacksonville may actually appear scenic to those driving though or sitting in traffic.
Advertising is a necessary part of doing business. It's a beautiful thing. Let's see if we can get one of these towers in DT Jax!
I can see ads a few hundred miles across floating in low earth orbit one day. All in the name of reaching a larger audience (aka the Northern hemisphere). Or better yet, like in Futurama, they'll advertise in your dreams!

Agreed, it's no worse than some of the JTA busses:

I'm actually ok with ads if they are being used to help support amenities that we won't raise our taxes to cover. In the image above, I notice the overhead powerlines more than the Keith Pierson bus wrap.
I did think this was a belated april fools joke.
Then they are really drawing this joke out!
QuoteMiami CRA defers vote on giant LED billboard tower
The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency has delayed its vote on plans for an electronic billboard tower that could grant millions in incentives to the Miami agency in exchange for approval.
Developer Michael Simkins compares his proposal for the Miami Innovation Tower, a 633-foot advertising tower with flashing LED billboards, to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Eiffel Tower. But the item was deferred at the CRA's meeting Monday after officials said the agreement wasn't ready. The developer would also need a signed permit from the city. No date has been set for the next vote.
The CRA is considering a proposal by Simkins' Miami Big Block to build the billboard tower with four LED screens for a combined 84,750 square feet ear the northeast corner of Northwest 10th Street and Northwest 1st Street, giving the billboard visibility from Interstate 95, Interstate 395 and much of downtown. The Miami Worldcenter project would also be nearby.

I suppose one could say at least our city is consistent...
Instead of vehemently opposing billboards, why not spend that time and energy into working on legislation that would only allow certain types of billboards and redirect portions of the profits into areas that have a dire need for funding?
I say consistent, because it seems this is the same way we approach development. It needs to be held to a higher standard and have not only an immediate financial benefit to the area, but a prolonged one as well.
I've never understood either of these viewpoints: An uncompromised 'No' & Giving things away for free. And our city seems to be hell-bent on using only one of those 2 options at every turn.
Billboard companies are parasites on the taxpayer. We build the roads and public spaces and they use them for their own profit. They pay rent to the private property owners on whose land they put them; that's frequently themselves, not to the taxpayers whose space they are using.

Parasites on the taxpayer?!?!?
I don't follow you. They pay property taxes. They pay income taxes on the money generated from the signs. There are all sorts of miscellaneous fees and such. They have to pay other businesses to come and change out the advertisements.... They're far from parasites.
I get that you don't like billboards, but just because you don't like them doesn't make them blight or parasitic or anything more than something that you don't like.
Not that I would expect out city to take an initiative, but why not try modeling the laws to allow them, but create financial obstacles for them to be. Use those finances in ways that benefit the public. Eliminate the loopholes that cut everyone out of the picture except for the advertisers themselves.
The state (or whoever owns the road) can't plant anything that would block the view of a billboard for (I think) 500 feet.

It includes 2 restaurants, an observation deck, retail and an ampitheatre.

Maybe this is how we can replace the old county courthouse with a convention center without taxpayer money. Win-win.
