I really love these historical bits of knowledge. They make driving around our city even more interesting! Thanks so much for all your research!
Awesome article!
I would like to see the mathews bridge painted a "fire red." I didn't know it was maroon, looks more like rust red.
Could you imagine them spending money on something like that today? Say re-painting the main street bridge a bolder blue because we have the Armada? Would never happen today :(
I thought it was garnett for FSU, to balance the orange (Acosta) and blue (Main Street) bridges downtown.
My guess is that it was due to be painted, not a special paint job just to change the color.

Different people say different things about the garnet: some do say it was for FSU, while others say the Bulls. The timing of the repainting definitely suggests it was chosen for the Bulls, however, as they made a big sensation that year. The Acosta Bridge was actually yellow, not orange. But either way, the Mathews' garnet color does goes back to FSU: the Bulls adopted it in tribute to the Seminoles (they also incorporated the Gators's orange and the Bulldogs' black and silver).

Will have to see if I can find some pictures of the Acosta, I could swear it was orange.
Notice in the Mathews picture, no center barrier wall?

The Mathews looks 100% better with the maroon paint. The silver Mathews had as much charm as the Myrtle overpass.
I remember orange not yellow of the old Acosta, didn't know that was the reasoning fot painting the the Mathews. The zoo downtown imagine that.
The old Acosta Bridge....

LOL looks like there's a yellow car going across the bridge. I was very young back then, but certainly looks orange. I actually miss that bridge but like the neon light across the new one. I think thats gone to now right?
Yes, the neon light is a thing of the past....just like the old Acosta Bridge!
