Its official, the SUV is gone, and I am a bicycle commuter...
Good for you!
I wish that I could, but it would involve biking through some bad areas to reach work.
I have to go through Oakland (eastside), I rode it a few times before to see how it went. So far I havent gotten more than a few double takes on my way through.
Yeah, you should easily be able to outrace any foot-based hoodlums. Congrats on the savings and additional health benefits.
I'd have to travel along Beaver to the west side, and pretty much any way I could go, isn't a good area to ride when it's dark out.
As for out-racing the foot based hoodlums, you should...but that doesn't account for what they're carrying.
Woo Hoo!!! Another commuter!
There would be many more, if the city was actually bike friendly

One could also argue that in order for the city to be bike-friendly, the city would have to see the need to be. If there is no commuter presence then why would they spend the money to build the infastructure?
My SUV is almost gone too(thanks to the bank wanting a payment...gezz).
But the good news is no more $1,000 glovebox repairs, and no $5000 engines.
I would, but I work about 18 miles away.
you can bike to the bus then put your bike on the front of the bus. i do it sometimes...it's fun.
i snapped a shot of DTP in east jax today...

The fact is, when there's bike lanes, they are used.
Love the photo of DTP...that sure is a fancy bike he's got there...

DTP, Congrats on the big move. While your commute is a short one and the fist few days may offer a few challenges you may not have planned for. I'm sure you'll start reaping the benefits on day one.
Let me know when your ready to do a commuter profile for Bike Jax. We love to hear from the newbies.

Good for you. I guess you start out really early and your job has a few shower stalls and a place to change yeah?

who knows what DTP's ride is like. i'm sure he'll drop in and tell us.
i know when i bike to work, i start out at about the same time as i would in my truck. it is actually quite nice though. going about 15mph, you constantly have the wind cooling you down. have yet to hit a rain shower as well. as far as having a place to change - don't need it b/c it takes less than 10 minutes. if i did, i could use the bathroom here to change. no shower needed b/c no major sweat worked up. in addition to saving $$, i know i am getting the additional benefits of getting in a little better shape and - FUN.
