My immediate thought with "The Barge" could be somewhat of Jax's version of Conch House's outdoor floating dock with live music. Granted you'd have to throw some outdoor bars out there too. I know a bunch of people drive to Conch House on Sundays for Reggae Sundays. I'd be interested to see what plans they have in store for entertainment with that particular area.

Seeing whose project the Barge is*, and that their plans for events include those hip and trendy forward-thinking things that are so popular with the cultural community right now like bacon, facial hair competitions, and food trucks, I am more than a little skeptical of this project. On the other hand, my 60 year old dad out in St. Johns County thinks this is a wonderful idea and will be one of the first ones there, white socks, man sandals, jorts, and all. He's really psyched and looks forward to hearing funk and Jimmy Buffet cover bands.

* Anyone who attended the "Bad-Ass Men's Whiskey night", or has seen a Kia used car commercial knows.

A resounding "huh?" to all of that^

It seems only fitting that the first musical act at this new venue should be El DeBarge and the Family DeBarge. Assuming he's kicked his cocaine addiction, nothing would be sweeter than to hear "Who's Johnny" softly cascading across the St. Johns River. Make it a yearly event and "DeBarge on the Barge" could become the next Lollapalooza or Bonnaroo!

And maybe Johnny Five the robot could be recommissioned & make an appearance. Cocaine, Jeri curls & a dancing sassy robot on the river. Be a helluva party.

My point is: if you read their plans for this, it seems like what my 60 year old dad would think is cool or "hip" with those who are interested in downtown culture (i.e. very out of touch): bacon, facial hair competitions, and food trucks (nothing against food trucks, just that every event seems to think they can add a relevance or coolness factor simply by having food trucks show up).  The husband of the husband/wife duo played MC to an event downtown a few months back called the "Bad Ass Men's Whiskey Night". As if the name alone (which I am sure he coined) didnt tip you off to how out of touch this guy is, his comments on the mic made it verrrrrrrry clear.

I think this could be a successful idea if it actually had culturally forward-thinking events/ideas attached. As it stands, however, the events/ideas seem lazy and pathetically outdated by several years.

I do not think there is anything outdated or "uncool" about the first proposed idea for the barge.  Craft beer and bourbon festivals have been very successful both here in Jax and throughout the country.  I also see nothing wrong with throwing bacon into the mix.

If anything, bacon is one of the "hip" foods for my generation. Just scroll through buzzfeed and you will see 1,000 articles about bacon.

Since this has little to do with the Southbank Riverwalk, suggest title be changed to "The BARge at Friendship Fountain" or something more relevant...

Just barely a month after it's open the sailor fountain is already broken. It's been completely shut off for the past week. There are still several broken ground lights in-front of the Peninsula and the rain on Saturaday caused flooding under the mainstreet that still isn't completely dried up.... Who's supposed to be maintaining this stuff?

I would say report it to the Parks Department, but they are pretty busy with the blight that is love locks right now. That is much higher priority at this time.

Not to mention the broken part will probably have to go through a 6 month procurement process to obtain the replacement.

Not true. Just like when the new Friendship Fountain broke shortly after commissioning, this fountain will certainly be repaired for free under warranty. Of course, when it breaks again in a few years after the warranty has expired, it will just sit broken forever. Maybe if we didn't do everything to the lowest bidder we could have things built right the first time, and they would last the test of time.

Or call councilman Redman 630-1394. still in Dist. 4 until July 1. Redistricting.
Still waiting to hear back from Jack Shad about Public Parking between the Penninsula and the Charthouse. Mentioned this at the last DIA board meeting.
Stay positive.

I would think this would have to be within warranty for this. Punchlists for projects like this typically last a couple months.

The Barge needs city help in changing current policy to become reality.  It also wants the possibility of being able to get public money:

QuotePlan for a floating entertainment venue in downtown needs city support

Their company expects to begin booking parties on the barge as early as this November. But under current regulations, the barge can be docked for just 72 hours before it has to leave and would have to wait 30 days before returning.

Emerick said his business model cannot exist under those conditions. Instead, he wants to reach an arrangement with the city that would allow the barge to permanently sit on the river.

Doing so would first require the city to get permission from the state, which owns the river and must approve any structure that permanently floats on it. The company also wants a long-term lease with the city that would grant them access to the site, spell out details like power usage and rental fees and possibly include public funding for the start-up venture.

If your business model doesn't work under those conditions - and probably even under the "revised" conditions - you don't change the conditions you change the model.

Has Emerick ever ran / started a business?  There better be a RFP if the city is going to support this initiative in any way.

Has anyone SEEN this barge?  The thought of a "barge" permanently moored up at Friendship Fountain does not sound like any sort of improvement to our city's waterway. Unless Al knows someone over at "Pimp My Barge", they typically are not the most attractive vessels in the pond...

The access along that stretch is pretty crappy.  Nothing between the west side of charthouse and the DCSB.  I imagine that the proposed apartment complex will put in a connection, they're going to have to do some extensive work to pretty up the seawall in that area.  Apparently no one considered what the old seawall under the old riverwalk looked like, it's a mess.

Update on the apartment complex:

QuoteCompletion would be by early 2018.

Alliance Residential wants to develop 255 to 265 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments at the site of the former Crawdaddy's Restaurant. Alliance Realty Partners LLC of Winter Park applied in late August for a mobility fee calculation certificate from the city.

An architectural site plan filed with the application shows apartments fronting Prudential Drive, with an amenity center behind them.

Another group of apartments fronts the Jacksonville Riverwalk on the riverfront, with a pool and courtyard that offers a river view.

In between, and lined with apartments on the west side next to the Lexington, is the parking area.

Graff said the apartment buildings are envisioned as five stories along Prudential Drive and six stories along the riverfront..

He said a six-level, 489-space parking deck, whose floors are not as high as residential floors, will serve the complex.

Designs could provide for river views for most of the units. Renderings are not available.

"That is our intent, to provide the view of the river and the Downtown skyline," he said.

Sidewalks would connect Prudential Drive to the Riverwalk on both sides of the apartments. The western connection could feature a hardscape, fountain and public art, Graff said.

City Council Vice President Lori Boyer said she met with the developers and saw the preliminary concept plans. Boyer, who represents District 5 that now includes the Southbank, said she encouraged greater public access to the Riverwalk and that developers talked about creating a feature that would provide additional public access.

There is an access point at the Radisson/Wyndham/Lexington, which you can see in the video, about half way between the Charthouse and the old Crawdaddy's site.  Placing the new riverwalk into the river a bit included structural and aesthetic considerations.  Structurally, it disconnects the riverwalk from the fate of the sheet pile retaining wall that could fail at any time.  I don't believe the city owns or controls all of that wall and to rehabilitate it would be expensive.  Future connections would be a welcome change, as it would mean increased usage but a wall failure that takes down the riverwalk was unacceptable.
