It's the prime example of socializing losses in support of private profits. The organizers, vendors, advertisers, sponsors, venue management and ownership, lodging, etc., etc., etc., make a killing while the taxpayers foot the bill for the event with no feasible way to recover the expenditure. It's gotten worse in recent times, where worldwide cities are actively racing to the bottom because major events are viewed as prestige items. I think it's reached the point where anybody with a brain understands the economics, but what do you do to stop it?
