St. Augustine commissioners shut down requests for two hotels taller than 50 ft. to be built off Ponce de Leon Boulevard.
The applications were for one existing hotel, the Quality Inn at 1111 Ponce de Leon Blvd., and a planned hotel, the Ponce Hotel.
The ordinances were heard at a Monday meeting, and both hotels requested that zoning be changed for the properties they were looking to build upon.
Commissioners were sensitive to concerns that large hotels would lead to even larger developments, according to the St. Augustine Record.
The current zoning for both properties restricts them to 35 feet.

Clearly the tourism economics in St Augustine are healthy enough to support more beds, but I applaud them for sticking with their architechural and zoning goals.

The next issue will be pricing. Lack of supply will force the prices up. Good for the B&B's in town.
