Title: What your zip code says about you.
Post by: finehoe on October 16, 2014, 02:05:47 PM
In the United States, where there are virtually no regulations on data collection, someone trying to profile you can fairly easily learn how much money you make, your education level, whether you own a home, who you voted for, how many kids you have, how much credit card debt you're carrying, even what you thought of the series finale of How I Met Your Mother.

The scope of the American data machine is staggering. A Federal Trade Commission report released earlier this year found the firm Datalogix, a partner of Facebook, has marketing data about almost every U.S. household—plus information detailing more than $1 trillion in consumer transactions.

Anyone can plug a zip code into Esri's database, [http://www.esri.com/data/esri_data/ziptapestry] which makes for an addictive game of "guess my identity."

Wow, interesting.  My zip code was combined with a couple others for a "general area", but it's pretty spot on.

Median HH income $52K (pretty low for an affluent area of SF...though it's such a mixed-income city)
Median age 39.2 (doesn't seem to match the "descriptions", or the "vibe" of the area, but nonetheless probably true with all the old 50+ retired couples living on the hills)
Density 53,684 ppsm (I know my zip code is higher, but combined overall area is definitely around this on avg)

40% Laptops and Lattes

(Household Type - singles, Housing - high density apts)

29% Metro Renters

(Household Type - singles, Housing - multi-unit rentals)

20% Trendsetters

(Household Type - singles, Housing - high density apts)

7% Family Foundations

wait...so your zip code in Jax. has a higher household income and a younger age than the one simms lives in in San Fran....how can that be?

omg imagine that!  I live next to a new condo building where units started at ~$2M and went up to $6M+ (but also included 5 on-site below-market units for between $178K-$250K for 1/2 BRs) and catty corner to an SRO housing project where rents for Single Room Occupancy efficiencies are between $500-700 and rent to the poorest of the poor who are one step above homeless in this town (essentially projects in SF).  They also combined several zip codes for me.  They combined several for Pacific Heights, too, where the average HH income is less than many zip codes in Jax, however, there is also one of the greatest concentrations of wealth on the planet.  Despite the "disparity" of income that people think of nationally when they think of Manhattan and SF, there really is an amazing MIX of income and backgrounds throughout the city.  Not uncommon for a billionaire to be within a quarter mile of middle/lower middle income housing, or even projects, or to live on the same block containing apartments for young singles such as myself.

I don't think you'll find any zip codes in SF as "wealthy" as the wealthiest in Jacksonville if you're going off of median household income.  Definitely more even'd out.

Also SF has a pretty high median age (so does Manhattan).  It's not because the place is filled with old people, it's because there are very very few people under the age of 22, even fewer under the age of 18.  Not a lot of families.  It's actually a very "young" city in that the vast bulk of the population is 23-55 (of which upper 30s is right in the middle).  Not a fantastic city to retire in nor a cheap city to live on a fixed retirement income, nor an economical city to raise a family in.

Okay, finally found a link of theirs that actually works and here is what it gives you... I was going to do a bunch but it quit after two zip codes. World Golf Village and Downtown Jax. I did skip around at first and noted that Julington Creek Plantation has a higher income then Ponte Vedra, Nocatee or WGV. This was good news to me as it gives me a chance at moving my Colombian gal closer into the metro! The income out along Beaver/Lane area was actually quite a bit higher then downtown as well. There are some pretty cool things you can find on this. Here is the working link:    http://www.esri.com/data/esri_data/ziptapestry-noform
