Anything even remotely like Fat Matt's in Atlanta?

The pig bbq...simple juicy and oh so good.
A good lunch spot for ribs is Checkers BBQ at 3566 St Augustine Rd. He even makes his own BBQ sauce on site with no corn syrup.
I do my own, haven't really found a great place here.
Toby's on New Kings Rd just south of 295 on the Northside.
You're gonna need to be a tad more specific.
If you want baby-backs - TCs at Lem Turner & Edgewood (also a fantastic Carolina mustard sauce)
If you want Wet ribs - Bono's at Lane & Ramona
If you want Dry ribs - Mojo #4 in Avondale
I'm by far not an expert, but I've eaten them in enough places to know what to order and where.
I like Toby's, but it's not worth the drive to me. The Pig is good and consistent. Sonny's is Sonny's.....
There's another BBQ place, Gators, right off of Cahoon & Beaver at the Marietta exit that some friends of mine swear by, but I haven't actually had.

Sorry to hear that. I haven't worked on Lem Turner in over a year and a half. I used to go there about once a week for the better part of 5 years. The family that owned it was part of the Cotton family of Cotton's BBQ off of Main St. if I'm not mistaken.
Moreso than the ribs, I was a huge fan of their 1/4 chicken lunch....
Bono's...Bono's...the boss of BBQ. Not a big BBQ guy, but that jingle is catchy as hell though. DUUUUVALL! :)

That's one of my favorite spots for their seafood buffet on the weekends. I've followed Chef Art since he moved his cooking from the northside at Palms Fish Camp.
I do agree with a poster below Mojos for dry rub. I prefer dry rub over sauced myself. A hole in the wall place is at the corner of Cassat and Blanding, at the Lakeshore grocery, where they sell produce, but they smoke meats every day. Their brisket is succulent as in on par with Mojo's.
4 Rivers isn't bad either, but I like their peppery sauce.

Fatt Matt's is a low bar considering they don't smoke any meat and cook everything in an oven.
Gators BBQ on the Westside is my favorite BBQ place in Jax. The ribs are pretty good.
I love the brisket the most.
Try the ribs at Culinary Outfitters in St Augustine. They only have them on Wednesday 11-2pm . Get there early because they run out sometimes. They are very tender & the meat falls off the bone. Good sauce too.

Good to know.
I agree with Gators and Mojo.
I'll reiterate, as for now, Bow-Legz is the best spot for ribs in Jacksonville.

I've yet to try Checker's, now called Southern Charm, off of St. Augustine Rd...but I hear good things about them.

The most disappointing spot has to be Jenkin's. A place that I remember being good. They gave up over the years. Nostalgia is a powerful force, and I think it's the main reason they're still in business. :-\

Thank you! I moved here 7 years ago. Being from Texas, I was in search of BBQ upon arrival. Everyone told me about Jenkins, so I had high hopes. I almost gave up my Jacksonville BBQ search after trying it. Not only not good, but actually bad.

I wasn't aware that oven baked ribs sets a low bar.
I can vouch for Mojos #4 since I was just there yesterday and it was fantastic. Much better than the last Mojos I tried (University and San Jose location).
I've lived here my whole life and after traveling and trying barbecue elsewhere, it's tough to find anyplace in town that is above average. The original Bono's is a stone's throw from my house and I guess they were good long long ago but now it's the driest most flavorless meat I've ever had. Jenkins I've heard (from friends, who have gone there since they were kids) has gone into the dumper since the kids took over. No idea if that has anything to do with their decline in quality.

I have gotten green bread from Jenkins before. If you eat at Jenkins you take a risk at your health IMO.

Yes, used to live in the neighborhood across the street. You go to Fat Matt's for the ambience and music, not for the ribs. If it's cooked in an oven, it's not really BBQ imo.
I don't know about Fatt Matt's but I had a decent meal at some hole-in-the-wall named Pit Boss BBQ in Hapeville this past weekend. It went well with the butt kicking my starting Dolphins DL put on Matt Ryan Saturday night.

I was at this location back in May 2015 I stayed at the Renaissance Concourse Hotel. A hotel I have been staying at since 2007 when I'm in Atlanta to see old friends and watch Airplanes from my Balcony. I wanted Bar B Q and I hadn't gone to this place before until 2015. I enjoyed the food I didn't care for the ice tea. But the Bar B Q was very good. I also have been to Fatt Matt's but it also has bands that play on the weekends. This is when I have gone in the past. But the place is small and everyone is on top of each other. Fatt Matt's isn't in Hapeville its at 1811 Piedmont Ave. NE Atlanta, GA 30324 ~ 404-607-1622 http://fatmattsribshack.com/

You can't go in to a BBQ join in Jax thinking you're going to get texas BBQ. We're more mustard based being so close to GA. Now, if only texans figured out how to put beans in their "chili" :)
You really can't compare Texas style BBQ to our style of BBQ, two totally different things. I went to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo national BBQ cook off once in Houston and frankly did not like their style of BBQ. I will stick to my pork ribs, drowned in mustard based sauce from the PIG.....the mustard based sauce is the staple for this part of Florida as well as Ga.

Hmm, seriously some of the best ribs I have had. I'm okay with ribs in an oven. I don't consider it cheating.
What are your recommendations?

Damn. I guess you're ok with microwave grits, pillsbury biscuits from a can and pre-cooked bacon, too. ;D

Lol, I'll have to agree with NRW.
Try Monroe's on Highway Ave or out on Beach Blvd. They have good "everything".

BS! I once called into a National talk show to complain about the fact that the radio host said. You can't get good Blue Crabs unless you eat them in Maryland? What? You have got to be kidding I said. At the time I drove 2 hours each week to get Blue Crabs steamed Maryland style in Castleberry Florida. Sure I know EVERYBODY has an OPINION but my Opinion is One doesn't have to go to Texas just for Texas Bar B Q nor does one have to go to Maryland for the taste of steam Crabs. Jesus do I have to go to San Francisco for true Sour dough? NO! If I have missed the point here sorry but then again it's my OPINION!
Relax man, it's BBQ, not a religious discussion, although we are in the South.
I was simply saying that generally you're not going to find Texas BBQ round here, most of ours is mustard/GA style.

The Choose I gets pretty passionate about mundane things. He's like a more tolerable mtrain and a more coherent Know_Growth.
