Title: Americans' Waistlines Are Growing Ever Larger
Post by: thelakelander on September 17, 2014, 06:39:33 AM
Possible reasons include sleep deprivation and medication, says a new study.

QuoteStreeeettcchhh... that's the sound of the nation's stomach expanding. Americans are now more than an inch fatter around the waist on average than they were in the late '90s, though among certain demographics the increase has been nearly twice that.

The waist circumference of American citizens in 1999 and 2000 averaged 37.6 inches, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others. By 2011 and 2012, it had swelled to 38.8 inches. That almost qualifies for the medical definition of abdominal obesity for men (a waist circumference of greater than 40.2 inches) and exceeds it for women (34.6 inches).

It's crazy that people are exceeding the 23.5 hour daily recommended maximum of sitting around each day.

Hahahaha.... I guess when you look at it that way we're actually overachievers.

IMO, we've gone astray on the portion sizes.  Sure, activity  plays a big part of it because it all boils down to a simple fact:  calories in = calories out.

And you see all kinds of info out there regarding gluten, carbs, High Fructose CS, dangers of red meat, etc... and while I think it's important to know, I also think that none of the 'red flags' presented are the real danger as long as you moderate your intake and are aware of what you're consuming.

You're spot on with your portion size observation, I usually can't finish a meal at a restaurant any more, the portions are so huge. When I do I feel ill, it's not normal and it puts the onus on you to pay attention instead of auto piloting through it. But I wish there was an option or something, I really don't need or want a hamburger the size of a dinner plate.

+1 on the portion analysis
+99 on making all of us overachievers today!

I'm pretty sure I'm on record here as one who would easily pay more for less.

As it is, I find it easier to order a to-go box with my meal, split it when it gets to the table and put it in an empty seat until I'm done.

I went on a burger binge a few weeks ago:  M-Shack x 2, Epik Burger, Lola's & Blind Rabbit.  I liked the burgers from BR and Lola's better, but prefer the portions of M-Shack and Epik.   I also prefer their option of ordering a side if I want it, and not having it included in the price.  Either way I go, the price works out the same because from BR and Lolas, I have lunch for the next day, so that's not an issue, but I won't lie - I prefer paying $6-8 each time rather than go through the hassle of boxing it up.

Jaybird, you run about 138 miles a week.  You don't fit in the overachiever category, lol.

The higher quality the food, the less the portion...typically.  With Jacksonville's food scene improving, has anyone noticed a correlation to food portions getting smaller?

Also, thanks WOMEN!!  The men are relatively keeping it together.  I started a new exercise routine that's more cardio-centric and personally have dropped about 2.5 pounds, and I was already lean :) 5'10" and 149 to 146.5...I think that's about bottom for me

Fewer people smoke.

Addiction-shift

Perhaps we should put a $5.00 tax on a bag of chips.

It was for me!  BTW... I am now 13 months nicotine free!  Sad to say that seems to have translated to a pound per month also...

Just think, Simms, in a few more weeks you'll be able to just slide into that Size 0 and really WOW the upper management with more than what your stellar resume can include.

For me I am going to have to blame it on these great local craft beers.  :-\

So many of us are emotional eaters and that alone can be the issue. Ive always been an "eat like a bird" kind of person and im very aware of my stomach..i guess its my natural state...i see so many that just pound down the food without feeling their body renourish itself..i feel for those with too much girth but portions is everything...we have developed a society that loves to congradulate itself as though just waking up is something due for an award so over indulgence is so common..moderation is the key to life ive heard from so many that have lived a long and well life..moderation

I know right?  That's the plan!  I think people reward/migrate towards other people who care about their appearances - in-shape/good-looking people seem to do better than average!

Hashtag comeback?!?!?

Call it what you will, but I'm not the one who posted his/her height/weight.  If I didn't know any better I'd say you were gloating;  maybe I'm wrong.  And since I didn't see a picture, I can only go by your own self-description of 'good-looking', but, again, the self-glossing is to be expected, right?

So thanks for the contribution to the thread, as usual, and good luck losing those next couple lbs.  Maybe after one of your average priced $85 haircuts you should try some hot yoga.  I hear it's a great technique to shed those last couple 'baby' pounds.

And to answer your question, "No".  There isn't exactly any correlation between restaurant quality (read price) and portion size.  Benu is running an 18 course Chef Tasting if you're in the area.  And most other 'fine dining' establishments typically serve close to a pound of food per entree:  4-6oz protein, 4-6 oz veggie and another 4-6 oz starch, not including specials and risottos.

I would say so.

At least it's a deal, I guess.
