Title: The Geography of NFL Fandom
Post by: thelakelander on September 09, 2014, 07:13:38 AM
The Patriots really do rule New England, and the Cowboys might just be America's team. But after that, things get complicated. For example, according to these maps, the Jags now have a patchwork of fans in South Carolina....

Some of that isn't too surprising. The SE corner of South Carolina is technically part of the Savannah media market, so they're guaranteed to get a decent amount of Jags games every year.

I think if the team can get more successful under Bradley, you could eat into the mixed counties into the panhandle. Palm Coast looks to be Cowboys, which makes me think that it's just a large jumble of different teams. Being successful will get you support in that direction.

Credit Mark Lamping for emphasizing getting the preseason games on TV and expanding the radio market to try to recapture the Panhandle, coastal GA and SC, and even southern Alabama.

Yes, Lamping has been a tremendous hire.

They actually have a real broadcast network now.

I can't help thinking that's Steelers yellow instead of Jags.  The shading looks a little lighter to me.

I thought that too, but it's Jags according to the article.

Here's last year's map for comparison:

A comparison from the two years makes it appear the South Carolina fans are Steelers. The Jags did seem to increase their Facebook footprint though in North Florida as well as Charlton County, GA.

That's definitely Steelers fans in South Carolina (and Liberty County, Florida). Using Photoshop or Hex Color Finder confirms it.
