Title: If you had one day to spend in NE FL what would you do?
Post by: fhrathore on May 13, 2008, 07:05:09 PM
My uncle from Switzerland is visiting my family soon and my mom has delegated me with the task of how to entertain my uncle, so, because the people here are by far the most knowledgeable of such things, I now delegate the task to you guys  ;)

If I had one day, I would check out the Zoo, and on the way, drive through some of Jacksonville's neighborhoods (Riverside, Avondale, San Marco).  I would then drive back along A1A, take the ferry over, and cruise along the ocean.

Depends on where he's from or what he likes.  If it were a weekday I would do breakfast at Metro Diner or The Fox, cruise downtown's riverfront via Avondale/Riverside/San Marco, head toward the ferry (end up in Fernandina @ lunch), do Fort Clinch, come down A1A for nice coastal views (stop @ Big Talbot), check out the Jax Beach scene; from there I'd either head South through Ponte Vedra to St. Augustine or, if there's a Sun's game in town, keep it closer to the core...........Or you could just go golfing or charter a fishing boat or take surfing lessons or go to the brewery or gamble via dogs or offshore or check out Town Center or hang out at a bar or go horseback riding or rent scooters (St. Aug.) or do the museum loop or watch planes @ the base(es) or check out babes @ JU/UNF (springtime, baby!) or go quail hunting or.........................................
Title: You couldn't get a radar fix on my location...

Grab my camera and recorder and head off into the woods. With a pile of old maps the trusty snake stick and pack of tiny widow jars, water and other cool things. A canoe, Pottsburg Creek, metal detectors, Hiking past a mill pond and into the magic. Pitchers that eat flys, Lily's that kill humans and ivey that just makes you wish you were dead. Time enough to think about the old house, the abandoned road and the trestle that sags in the middle of the channel. My industrial wanderlust is joined by a homeless friend, and off into the canyons we march. Move a rock and adjust the hole and down deep into the earth we go. Past the layers of today and tomorrow and into a frozen moment from yesterday... head light on, soaked to the bone, and touching my City in ways no human has seen in 50 years or more. Standing in the entrance to the tunnel, not far from the canoe landing and I swore I heard a whistle. A 5 chime sound from the railroad. Then a bell raises and falls with the regular sound of an electric knocker... In the distance announcements are being made, "Florida East Coast Train number 75" or "Atlantic Coast Line passengers for..."  On drugs? Lost my mind? NOT! Just allowing the rich memories to flood in and dance before me, it's all in knowing where to look.
